IRWIN ELEMENTARY REPAIR FWCS Building Renovation

RENOVATIONS AT irwin elementary SCHOOL OCCURRED OVER 2 summers STARTING IN 2014, WITH THE MAJORITY OF THE WORK COMPLETED BY THE FALL OF 2015. WORK INCLUDED BOTH EXTERIOR AND INTERIOR IMPROVEMENTS TO THE facility, the original portion of which opened in 1927.
Due to the age of the original portion of the building, there were significant improvements that were made to the masonry walls and window systems. The masonry was cleaned and tuckpointed, and in some areas where structural integrity of the walls were a concern, was even removed and rebuilt. Single pane exterior window systems were replaced with new thermally efficient windows.
Building infrastructure (heating & electrical systems) was failing and was completely replaced with new, more energy efficient systems. Air conditioning was added to the previously unconditioned building. Corridors received new ceilings, LED lighting, paint and tackboards.

Prior to the renovation, classrooms had sub-standard lighting, often experienced vast temperature variations due to failing heating systems and inefficient window systems, and had worn finishes and outdated teaching infrastructure.
Renovated classrooms received new, energy-efficient lighting systems, quieter and more efficient unit ventilators for heat and added air-conditioning, and updated finishes and teaching infrastructure.
Original plaster walls that had been cracked and peeling due to years of temperature variation were patched and repainted. New windows and temperature controls systems provided added protection against damage from the outside elements.
Added storage options were provided in the classrooms, and new doors and hardware replaced worn and broken systems. Classroom doors received security locksets which are easily locked from the inside of the room in case of an emergency situation.
An elevator providing handicapped access to the second floor was added as a part of the renovation, which along with the new ramp to the building and other improvements in adherence to Americans With Disabilities Act standards made the building fully accessible to all students, staff, and public.
Art and Music rooms also received upgrades in alignment with the renovations of the other classrooms. New tackboards, markerboards, and projection screens facilitate the teaching environment.
"It goes without saying, Irwin is a top-notch school . . . but it never really looked like it, it hasn't looked like it in a long, long time. It left [the students] feeling substandard, so [the renovation] has been nice. It's been exciting." ~Dawn rosemond, parent of irwin students
The renovations to Irwin Elementary School, along with full renovations at 9 other school buildings, the addition of chillers at 6 additional buildings, window replacements at 8 additional buildings and partial roof replacements at 27 buildings was made possible by the support of our community.
