Venice Winter Impressionism a photographic artwork in the new pictorialism style

INTRO

I stayed for a few days in Venice at winter time. The short moment at the beginning of the year up to the Carnival, when the city is sinking in an atmospheric melancholy. When the silence is coming and Venice presents its hidden beauty. Then appears the decadent charm of the lagoon city and invites you to a journey in the historical past.

To capture this special and rare mood by my photographic work, I decided for a development in the style of the new pictorialism. All shots shown in this Slate were taken with my Olympus OM-D equipment and the very special Crop-Squeezerlens. The focusing is done manually and hand held. Like any other lens, it enables the creative interplay between sharpness and blur.

The final results show Venice in a different look. As with light painted the lagoon city presents itself in a magical and mystical atmosphere. Enjoy this exceptional view with the Squeezerlens and a lot of famous quotes.

"If you read a lot, nothing is as great as you´ve imagined. Venice is -- Venice is better"

(FRAN LEBOWITZ)

A walk in the sestiere San Polo
"You are beautiful, Venice, in the midst of waves - placid mirror of sublime monuments".

(LORENZO STECCHETTI)

Mercato di Rialto in the afternoon
"It is always assumed that Venice is the ideal place for a honeymoon. This is a grave error. To live in Venice or even to visit it, means that you fall in love with the city itself. There is nothing left over in your heart for anyone else".

(PEGGY GUGGENHEIM

The magic of Venice´s canals
"I must tell you that we artists cannot tread the path of Beauty without Eros keeping company with us and appointing himself as our guide."

(THOMAS MANN - from Death in Venice)

Venice in silence
"The purest and most thoughtful minds are those which love color the most":

(JOHN RUSKIN - from The Stones of Venice)

Some impressions of the sestieri Cannaregio
"Once did she hold the gorgeous East in fee, and was safeguard of the West."

(WILLIAM WORDSWORTH - from Sonnet on the extinction of the Venetian Republic)

A walk in Santa Croce
"I stood in Venice, on the Bridge of Sighs; A palace and a prison on each hand; I saw from out the wave of her structure´s rise as from the stroke of the enchanter´s wand: A thousand years their cloudy wings expand around me, and a dying glory smiles over the far times, when many a subject land look´d to the winged Lion´s marble pines, where Venice sate in state, throned on her hundred isles."

(LORD GEORGE GORDON BYRON - from Child Harold)

The landmark of Venice: Palaces and gondolas
"Venice is like eating an entire box of chocolate liqueurs in one go."
