Mission-driven Oakland Restaurant Shares its Story using Adobe Slate #madewithslate

In the bustling Uptown district of Oakland, CA, Flora Restaurant is a shining example of a small business dedicated to improving its local community.

Dona Savitsky, co-owner of Flora, has a long history in Oakland. Along with her partner Thomas Schnetz, she owns multiple restaurants and a bar that helped transform Oakland's uptown into a culinary destination. She also cares deeply about the community and its youth. Years ago, Flora chef Rico Rivera found a great way to help support both — and it all started with their passion for locally grown and sustainable ingredients.

Flora and WOW Farm: A perfect partnership

WOW Farm began in 1999, when Philip Krohn converted a derelict West Oakland lot into a community garden. Its founding vision was to conserve urban green space by creating an organic farm. In 2012, Krohn partnered with Game Theory Academy to create an educational youth jobs program supplying fresh produce to local businesses. WOW Farm’s youth program teaches Oakland teens the principals of urban organic farming while offering meaningful, paid employment and hands-on experience running a small business.

WOW Farm supplies produce to Flora Restaurant, and Flora chefs and staff volunteer and teach at the farm.

“It’s a perfect match for Flora Restaurant,” says Dona. “WOW Farm not only provides us with outstanding produce, but it also gives us an opportunity to support a cause we feel strongly about — helping Oakland’s youth by teaching real-world skills.”

Telling Flora’s story with Adobe Slate

Flora Restaurant is very active on social media and wanted to share the story of its involvement with WOW Farm. According to Dona, “Slate provided us a way to communicate our story with customers and the community, easily and beautifully.” When she discovered Adobe Slate, she knew it would be the ideal app for the job.

“Slate gave us a way to communicate our story to customers and the community, easily and beautifully,” she says.

Despite her busy schedule, Dona was able to quickly create an engaging slate for Flora Restaurant. Slate brings together gorgeous photography and the full story of the Flora-WOW Farm partnership in an eye-catching, scrollable format that looks great on any device.

With Slate in her marketing toolkit, Dona can stay focused on Flora's innovative and delicious cuisine, while making Oakland an even more amazing place to live.
