We know some major programs can't be completed in that time, but we want to help you reach your goals as soon as possible.
Here are some things to focus on this first year to get you off on the right foot and set yourself up for success.
Get started well in your Freshman Year
- Develop friendships & become involved on campus
- Connect with one faculty or staff member who cares about your individual success
- Plan your first 2 years of course work, confirming and including any transfer courses that apply
- Devote ample time to your coursework
You'll start to be more focused in your studies this year so make sure you have all tools in place for success.
Set up the foundation for your major area of study in your SOPHOMORE YEAR
- Confirm your academic major. Know requirements and career options related to that major
- Make a plan for completing your remaining degree requirements and get registered on GoldPASS now
- Get involved in learning opportunities that are challenging and relevant to your goals and life
Now you'll want to start turning all this learning toward a career or post-graduate study.
Build out your expertise in your JUNIOR YEAR by taking advantage of programs for student success
- Expand your learning. Study abroad, be a leader, volunteer in the community, complete an internship, do a research project, etc.
- Develop your job or graduate school strategy and update your GoldPASS info so employers can begin to find you
- Update your academic plan as necessary
There are a number of ways to successfully complete your undergraduate experience
Show off what you've accomplished and set yourself up for success
- Participate in a capstone experience related to your field of study
- Seek additional learning opportunities aligned with your post-graduation plans
- Implement the job or graduate school strategy you developed during your junior year and make sure GoldPASS info is current
- Complete the Undergraduate Application for Degree and Commencement Attendance Questionnaire
- Be an active, engaged learner
- Maintain good academic standing and successfully complete an average of 15 credits per semester
- Know your degree requirements per your academic catalog year
- Monitor your learning goals and document your college achievements
- Be a positive member of UMD's academic and social communities
- Become actively involved in at least one co-curricular activity
- Use campus resources and ask for help when you need it
- Develop a financial plan and maintain financial aid eligibility (if applicable)
