Solarize NoVA Update on the 2014-2015 Campaign
In 2014 the Northern Virginia Regional Commission (NVRC) launched its Solarize NoVA campaign to help promote renewable energy and energy efficiency in Northern Virginia. NVRC was fortunate to partner with a not-for-profit organization, the Local Energy Alliance Program (LEAP), to help implement the program.
The program is a great success and we are pleased to tell its story. nearly1 in 5 new solar pv projects in northern virginia in 2015 was the result of the solarize nova campaign.
The amount of solar PV installed in Northern Virginia as compared to our neighbors in the National Capital Region is small, but growing.
Working with our local government partners, civic and environmental organizations here is what we have accomplished:
- 1,768 residents signed up and received FREE solar PV reviews
- 459 FREE Home Energy Checkups were completed.
- The average homeowner saves $79.20 annually as the result of the home energy checkup.
- 54 contracts for solar PV were entered into for more than $1.5 million in contract value; all of the installers were Virginia companies.
- Created Virginia's first solar PV map first as a pilot in Dumfries and now expanded to the Cities of Fairfax and Falls Church and the Town of Vienna. The map will be expanded into the entire region.
Environmental Benefits of Project
- 371 Metric Tons of CO2 not emitted
- 398,406 pounds of coal not burned
- 41,737 gallons of gasoline not consumed
As a result of this campaign we have increased the amount of solar pv installed in northern virginia by more than 11% and nearly 4% statewide compared to 2013!
