CHRISTMAS FOODS TRADITIONAL CHRISTMAS FOODS FROM DIFFERENT COUNTRIES

SPAIN

In Spain, food is plentiful at Christmas. There are various dishes to start such as king prawns, a selection of cured meats and canapés. The most popular main dishes are turkey, lamb, red cabbage and bream. But the specialities are the sweets, of which the star is “turron”. There are also “polvorones”, marzipan figures, “mantecados” and the typical King’s cake for the 6th January.

UNITED KINGDOM

Here the undisputed star on the table is the turkey which is accompanied by pigs in blankets (sausages wrapped in bacon), gravy (a sauce made with the natural juices of the turkey), cranberry sauce, potatoes roasted in butter, brussel sprouts and other vegetables. For dessert is Christmas pudding, made with prunes and accompanied by rum or brandy sauce. They also serve little pies made with apples, dried fruit and lard.

AUSTRALIA

The traditional dinner includes turkey with ham, pork and for dessert a Christmas pudding made with prunes. In some parts of Australia, the Christmas pudding contains a golden pip. Whoever finds the pip then has a year of good luck. The Billy Can pudding is also typical. It’s a cake made with tea and cinnamon with “Christmas Damper”, a type of aborigine bread and Dover’s Plum pudding, rice croquettes with dried fruit and nuts.

POLOND

The most traditional dishes in Poland are wafers with honey and a soup made from flour and water called Zurek. It’s a very varied dinner, though it doesn’t include meat and the banquet is made up of 12 dishes to represent the 12 months.

ARGENTINA

If you spend Christmas in Argentina, you can try Vitel Toné. It is of Italian origin and is a beef dish accompanied by a sauce made of mayonnaise and crumbled tuna, leeks and onions, spiced pasties and meat wrapped in cabbage. Turkey and pork with toast is also very traditional. At the end of the meal, sweets, jams and glasses of champagne are enjoyed.

MEXICO

The most traditional recipes usually include turkey stuffed with almonds, steak and fish as a main meal. To accompany, there are usually bananas, sultanas, olives, tamales, “romeritos” (a dish made with seepweed) and buñuelos (fried balls of doughnut). Other typical dishes to highlight are “manchamanteles” (a stew made of meat, chillis and vegetables), mole with romeritos, tamales and turkey. To drink, there is the inevitable “Ponche con Piquete”, a hot drink made with seasonal fruit, cinnamon and a bit of ‘aguardiente’ or fire water.

FRANCE

Dinner starts with duck or goose foie-gras, oysters and sea food with white wine. The main dish could be duck, turkey, pheasant or any poultry although in some regions, it could be game. They choose to eat these with pulses. After the banquet, the desserts include a chocolate flake filled with cream or truffles and the King’s cake: a pastry cake filled with almond paste..

ITALY

Christmas Eve is celebrated with the “cenone” which translates to a big dinner that starts with antipasti, cured meats and cheese, followed by spaghetti and clams, fish, vegetables, fresh fruit and turron.The most typical sweet at this time of year is “pannetonne” a type of cake with sultanas. The ingredients and shape differ depending on the part of the country.
