Hartland Point Excursion

A trip away has been on the cards for a while now. Walking locally is good but there is so much more to explore further afield. We have to thank Mark and Sarah for organising the cottage and booking it - they did a grand job! Hartland point, north Devon was the chosen destination. The cottage was part of a working farm and only a few hundred metres from the rugged shoreline.

There were eight of us and a little mascot that went away. Before setting off we first went to Macro for provisions and something to drink. We were all excited, ready to let our hair down apart from rich who was just excited. The weather was stunning and a good sign for things to come, the cars were packed to the rafters and we were ready to get on the road.

It did not take that long to get down there and once we were at that end we decided to stop at what appeared to be an idilic country inn for some lunch. On the inside it did not look quite as inviting though Ashleigh quickly became acquainted with their two dogs. We ordered some drinks and meals from a slightly bewildered landlady. The meals were ok but we shan't be rushing back.

We weren't that far away now. We followed Mark down some narrow winding farm tracks through what seemed like a maze of junctions and turns to a farm at the end of a long road. Initially we could not see the cottage because we drove on to the farm itself. The cottage was just beyond the big barn that block the view. A women kindly put us on the right path which we followed round the to the car park - we had made it.

The cottage was beautiful inside and out, it was a real sun trap. It was nice to see the blue sea in the distance and it was still sunny not a cloud in sight. Once things were unloaded it was only fair that we crack open the cider and enjoyed the view.

That evening we went for a short walk to explore the surrounding area and to see how easy it was to get on to the beach. We passed a small pond that was guarded by a goose and two duck foot soldiers. Beyond that we turned left by two small buildings that looked like outhouses, we weren't entirely sure of their use. We cut down onto a steep path the lead down on to marshy type grassland between two cliffs. It was as if part of the cliff had fallen away leaving a sort of marshy channel between. The stream topped over the edge of the cliff on to the rocks below. I took a few photos as the sun was contemplating dipping below the horizon as the lads climbed the huge outcrop.

That night we had pizza and settled in to our new abode sampling our liquid refreshments in into the wee hours. Myself, Sarah, Sarah and Lynn decided to try out the hot tub which was very nice looking up at the clear night sky.

The next day we had a smashing full english fry up that set us up for the day. We decided that on our first walk we were going to head left along the coastal path stopping off at the Hartland Quay hotel for refreshment. Day two we went right to visit the lighthouse and explore more of the fantastic coastline.
