Principal Report

Dear parents and carers,

As we approach the school holiday break, it's a great time to reflect on what we have achieved in Term 1. As a school we've had a busy and productive start to our year. Our students have worked diligently and have been involved in some fantastic learning experiences. Some of the highlights from our term include our school swimming carnival and our Kindy & Pre-primary Easter Hat parade. Upcoming events we're looking forward to are our Learning Journey on Monday evening, April 4th, and our school ANZAC assembly on Friday, April 8th, run by Mrs Hammond's Year 6 class.

I'd like to thank the staff of South Newman Primary School for the enormous amount of work they have put in over the term. From class and parent meetings, working with colleagues, support students and all the extra things they do to provide the best education possible for the students in their classes. We are lucky to have such a dedicated and enthusiastic staff.

Another hard working group within our school is our P&C. They provide the school with support and resources to provide the best possible experience for our students. Last year the P&C funded the upgrade and resurfacing to our senior basketball court and ran many fundraising events, such as the Mother's and Father's day stalls, and the lapathon. They also manage and run our school canteen and uniform shop. In order to be a functioning body, and to be able to continue to provide the wonderful things they do, the P&C need volunteers to join them. Please see the notice below from P&C President Gabriel Franklyn regarding the AGM:

Kindy Enrolments for 2017

Just to clarify concerns about Kindy in 2017, our enrolments have not opened yet. The enrolment process for Kindy in 2017 will begin at the start of Term 3 this year. Information will be sent out via our school app and newsletter, and a Kindy Enrolment banner will be on display at the front of our school. As Kindy is not compulsory, the number of classes for 2017 are formed based on the number of students who have enrolled by the end of the year. Please keep watch at the start of Term 3, for more information.

Staff Spotlight

Mr Rowan Prescott - Physical Education

Hello, I am Rowan Prescott. I have lived in Newman since January 2012. I grew up in Nannup and moved here from Busselton. I have my wife Brooke and son Harrison up here with me. I have a pretty small family. One brother, parents, a couple of cousins. Brooke is the one with the massive family. I teach Physical Education and make up 100% of the male staff. My hobbies include Taekwondo, and spending time with family and friends.

Miss Brittany Green - Year 2 Room 8

Hello, I am Brittany Green. I have been a teacher at SNPS since Term 4 of 2014. This is my second year teaching Year 2, but I taught Kindy and Pre-Primary when I first arrived. I moved here from the great southern town of Albany, where I grew up on a cattle and vegetable farm with my four younger siblings. I came to Newman as a graduate teacher looking for an adventure and I have loved every minute of it! Some things I enjoy doing are travelling, four-wheel driving, playing sport, and spending time with my partner and our two dogs. I love living in Newman and have made some amazing friends and have learned lots from talented colleagues along the way.

Mrs Briana Malia - Kindy B

Hello, my name is Briana Malia. I moved to Newman from Perth in 2004 as a bright-eyed graduate teacher. Since moving to this lovely town I have gotten married and had two children. My son is in Year 1 at South Newman this year and my daughter is just about to turn two. This year I am proud to be the teacher of Kindy B. In the past I have fulfilled a range of teaching and support roles from Kindy up to Year 3. I am particularly passionate about Early Childhood language and literacy development. I aim to foster a love of books and reading in my classroom – we always have quality, engaging texts to be shared in our room. Many studies have shown a strong correlation between the number of books read to a child in their early years and their future academic success. In my spare time I have a love for all things retro and vintage. I am also a bit of a Sci-fi nerd – I have Star Wars and superhero movies and merchandise all through my house. Item number one on my bucket list is making it to Comic-con in San Diego. It'll happen one day!

Miss Tenaya Jones - Year 2/3 Room 9

My name is Tenaya Jones and this is my fifth year living in Newman. I moved here to start my teaching career after I graduated from Edith Cowan University and have now been teaching for four years at South Newman Primary School. Over the years, I have taught Year 3’s, Year 2’s and Kindergarten and now I am teaching Year 2/3. I moved to Newman with my two bunnies and my partner, Kye, and since then my family has grown to include Kye, my son Logan, two dogs and five rabbits. Both my Mum and Dad are teachers and because of this we moved around lots but I call Albany home, and despite living in the Pilbara heat, I still love the wet, rainy and cold winters of down south. I am heavily involved in Netball, both umpiring and playing, and also love to dance and go to the gym, but my favourite thing to do is spend time with Logan.
