There are 2,800 burrows. I didn't get to see them all.

Cape Coral, FL is home to the largest population of the Florida species of the Burrowing Owl, in the WORLD. These owls don't migrate but viewing may be affected by mating season, nesting season and hot summers.

Cape Coral Friends of Wildlife (CCFW) is an all volunteer organization, dedicated to the protection and preservation of the Burrowing Owls in the area. Through their organization you can "adopt" an owl where proceeds benefit this owl population.

These perches are provided by the volunteers at CCFW

Burrow sites in vacant lots are marked by PVC stakes to alert maintenance workers to mow around the area. Those in housing developments are 'maintained' by the homeowner who may also opt for stakes. Praise to the homeowners who accept responsibility for their protection and who, per my brief experience, welcome visitors - be respectful.

Cape Coral is 100 square miles. There are 2,800 burrows. It is highly recommended that you seek a tour guide. My favorite is Beverly, affectionately known as The Owl Lady. She knows all things owl, shares the local lore, and if you're lucky like I was, she might take you to see the Bald Eagle family.
