PTK hosts installation ceremony
More added to roll of scholastic honor students
One hundred and twenty-six Meridian Community College students were tapped for membership in the Nu Upsilon Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa, the international academic honor society for community and junior college students.
MCC’s chapter hosted its annual membership celebration on Tuesday evening with Dr. Terry D. Cruse, administrative director and head of campus at Mississippi State University Meridian.
The meeting combined both fall and spring inductees.

Connecting colleges connect with potential students
Event set for March 31
The process of applying for college can be daunting.
But thanks to an annual event hosted by two Meridian higher educational institutions, there’s help along the path to getting in to college.
MCC and Mississippi State University-Meridian will hold the Fourth Annual College Connect on Thursday, March 31, from 3-6 p.m. in the MCC Tommy E. Dulaney Multi-Purpose Center.
At College Connect, participants can learn about the admission process at both institutions, complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) with a financial aid specialist; discuss financial aid options, complete an MCC Tuition Guarantee contract, apply for scholarships at MCC and learn about transfer scholarships at MSU-Meridian.
"The admission process and the financial aspects of going to college is intimidating to many people," said Nedra Bradley, director of financial aid at MCC. "It can be so scary that many people won't even bother with advancing their education. But in reality, the process is very simple."
Soraya Welden, dean of Student Services for MCC, said the partnership with MSU-Meridian for College Connect makes sense.
"This cooperation between the two learning institutions provides a wide variety of information that can answer many, if not all the questions an incoming student may have," Welden said. "You can even apply for state and federal tuition aid as well as scholarships here so it is a full-service event."
Candy Adams, the recruiting coordinator for MSU-Meridian, said some may think the two campuses compete for the same students but that really isn't the case.
"MCC is a community college and we deal with transfer students so the partnership is a natural one," Adams said. "We complement each other for the welfare of the student. They can stay in Meridian and get a four-year bachelors degree without leaving home."
A time of rejoicing and celebrating - Meridian Community College will be closed for Good Friday, March 25, through Easter Monday, March 28. The College will reopen on Tuesday, March 29.
Encourage students
Students may now apply for Foundation scholarships, and the deadline to apply is May 2. Applications are available in the Financial Aid Office.
To be eligible the student must meet the criteria of having a 2.0 or higher grade point average; be enrolled full or part time, completed at least one semester at MCC and return to MCC in the fall.
Something to smile about
Dental Assisting Program is offering three dental X-rays for the asking. “If you are in need of X-ray films or images – and check with your dentist - we can have these taken in the MCC Dental Clinic and sent to your dentist saving you a significant amount of money,” said Robin Johnson, Dental Assisting Program coordinator and instructor.
The Dental Assisting students are in need of a number of patient requirements during the spring semester. Appointments are scheduled on Monday or Wednesday afternoons by calling Johnson at extension 676.

The students of the Honors College inaugural class are now seniors at universities across the state, said Cathy Parker, an advisor to the MCC Phil Hardin Foundation Honors College.
“I have been contacted by one of our graduates, Breana Cook, who is working on her honors thesis at Ole Miss, about conducting a survey on our campus. She will be placing survey information in your mailboxes the week after spring break. Please take a minute to help her out by completing the survey. If you provide your name and contact information, you will be entered for a drawing for a gift card. However, the survey is anonymous and your information will not be linked to your responses in any way,” Parker said.
