Designing Your Distance Learning Course Tips for success

This resource will provide you with research based principles and methods for developing a quality distance learning course. Like the face-to-face classroom, there is no one formula for creating a sucessful online course. Planning includes consideration for the subject matter, the course objectives, and tools available to instructors and students.

How do I start?

You may be asking yourself this question right now, especially if this is your first time teaching online. Regardless of your prior experiences, it is important to keep in mind the overall goal of any course; pass knowledge and skills from teacher to student for future use. This is true for teaching and learning in any learning environment.

Know where you want to go.

Getting started often means beginning with the end. In other words, what is the goal (end) of your course for students?

Instructors and designers should ask questions like:

What is the purpose of this course?

What should students be able to do (or know) at the end?

What knowledge or skills should they have before they start?

How will I assess students to determine knowledge and skill mastery?

Developing ideas

The answers to those questions will reveal ideas for designing effective content which will contribute to the overall quality a course.

Stay focused

Remember to keep learning goals in mind when you are designing content. Keep on target and do not include extraneous information.

Enjoy the ride!

Students should find your course challenging, engaging, and feel that it contributed to their personal or professional growth.
