Me in 2050 A research and animation assignment

In this unit you will be learning skills in Adobe Flash to create a short animation that depicts you visiting the future, 2050 to be exact. Why that date? How old will you be then? The OECD (Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development) has created a report that forecasts the consequences of inaction on many issues related to the environment and sustainability.

You are to create a 30 - 90 second after effects animation that depicts you, or a youth from this school community in 2050, here in Toronto showing how this community has changed, for better or worse, depending on actions taken by us to address the issues in the report. Here are some resources you should explore to start you thinking about this not so distant future.

Explore Videos from the link below about the key themes in the OECDs research and policies.

Explore further on topics of sustainability. Note this is not just about the environment, but also about equity, economic sustainability, poverty, etc. Continue your research in a related area that is "close to home" in your own thinking. The personal research worksheet will help to focus you. List any new resources and their urls in the research journal file. You should fill this out digitally by downloading the worksheet as a Word document and filling it out.

Assignment

You will be creating a short 30 to 90 second ( you may make it a bit longer if you need to) animation of what this school or neighbourhood will be like in 2050 focussing on one aspect or issue discussed in the 2050 report of the OECD. It can be a POV or have a person in it. I will be providing some sample files with walk cycles for people who want to include simple stick figure type characters. Here is an example - far more complex than I want, that shows how animation can be made by moving parts, rather than full animation which will take us too long.

Final Instructions and Look Fors

You will be working in teams of 2 or 3 for this project. Please brainstorm 2 or 3 ideas based on the research you have done to create a very short animation of you in the future and show how one of the themes above will affect what the world is like then. When you have picked which of the three you want to use, create a storyboard for this animation. Please remember the following:

  • the animation is 30-90 seconds
  • You must work from and submit a storyboard
  • you or a person like you can be in it or it can be a POV but it is your groups view of life in 2050
  • the can be created in Adobe Animate (Flash), After Effects, or any kind of stop motion animation.
  • you can have text and credits at the beginning title and at the end, but NO text or dialogue can be used during the animation
  • live folly or sound effects are all that can be used
  • live video can be a component if you want as long as you overlay animation on to it (for advanced flash users only)
  • A copy of each member's research sheet and all your prep files, as well as the uploaded final animation presented in an Adobe Spark Page.
