I have been using the analogy of the hybrid car to define the landscape as I see it over the next 18 months. As we migrate from traditional on premise (petrol) equipment to cloud based (electric) technologies we need to adjust and refine our business models to suit these changing delivery models. There are a couple of simultaneous shifts occurring in the market which are changing the way that technology is adopted, procured and supported.
The first shift is the move to subscription based offerings where traditionally large and expensive procurement decisions are now available as smaller, bite sized transactions which allow a small business with 5 people to ‘afford’ technology typically reserved for enterprise customers.

The second shift is the change in ownership of technology decisions within the workplace. Where these were typically managed via a CIO or equivalent, these days they are being led by the employees directly. More and more they are using their own devices (laptops, tablets, phones) in the workplace, have their own cloud subscriptions (Dropbox, Box, iCloud) and work an ever increasing range of hours from a variety of locations. There is no longer a difference between a mobile and desk worker. Everyone is ubiquitously connected to work and home at all times on a myriad of devices, and with complete control. If technologies are not interconnected they are quickly discarded in favour of easier to manage solutions.

The challenge for all business owners is how to manage this to best effect an increase in productivity and profitability. Understanding the need to immediately plan for the hybrid model while at the same time ensuring that all future decisions are 100% electric is both the challenge and the opportunity in the next generation of business.
