Street Art - Freiburg Part V 10 Jan 2016

This was perhaps the most personally challenging day that I have had so far with photographing street art. My energy was low, my emotions were high, and it was raining. For better or worse, I pushed through and was able to find some interesting subjects for photos.

The site that I visited was physically challenging. I needed to get below the underpass where two sets of train tracks, two major roadways and the river intersected. Needless to say, it was very loud. Even with the music in my headphones turned up, I could feel the constant vibrations in the air and the ground. To make matters more interesting, protective barriers between the pedestrian path under the bridges were either non-existent or were just symbolic (something was there but it would really only cause one to flip and go head-first in to traffic instead of sliding feet-first). With such large photo subjects in a confined space, it was impossible to get the distance I needed to take pictures that captured all the colors and details of the pieces. I did my best. Unfortunately, some really impressive paintings did not yield good photos.

This picture is a small victory. I have seen it for several weeks, but whenever I am here, the sun the is shining, cutting across the text with a very sharp shadow, or there is too much traffic keeping from standing in the middle of the street, where I must be to have the right distance to get the picture. On this day, everything came together. The sun was blocked by clouds and there was a break in the traffic, and I dashed into the street to take the picture.

Sometimes I really don't know how I find my subjects. This was down a winding driveway behind a house and obscured by cars in the parking lot. I just had a hunch that this is where I would go if I were to paint something. So I followed my feet and found these. The shot was a bit tricky because I had to get an angle for the shot through one fence and over another... while balancing over the front of the parked cars.

On my way to the site, I found some more cool sticker art. Over the weeks, I have come come to learn which stickers belong to which artists. It is fun to see them around the city. When I share my finds on Facebook and Instagram, it is fun to see their responses to my discoveries. From learning patterns, I can now see which artists move through the city together. Sometimes they will make special stickers about their friendship and collaborations. It is really great to see. Occasionally, a spot will be completely covered with stickers from all the friends. To the casual observer, it doesn't look like much, but I see the all the friendship. It is wonderful to be able to capture this in my pictures.

Finally made it to the site!

Because Mother Nature has a great sense of humor, it only rained during the time I was taking photos. During the walk to the underpass, everything was perfectly dry. When I pulled out the iPad, it started to rain. When I finished at the city, the rain stopped again. But, when I got back into the city center and began photographing stickers and "paste-ups", it began to rain again. Go figure!

I am really enjoying my exploration and discovery of the street art in Freiburg. When time here is over I will definitely miss spending time with the artists and their work.

All photos were taken by NoSoCold. Out of respect for the artists, no subjects were moved, adjusted or in any other way tampered with. To see more of my photos, visit @Not_So_Cold on Instagram.
