Cochrane Public School News December 2015
Remembrance Day 2015
We are very proud of our Remembrance Day ceremony that we hold every year. The service began with the Cochrane Public School Orchestra playing "O'Canada". Students from Mrs. Wiseman's class recited the famous poem, "In Flander's Fields". Then students from various junior classes shared Remembrance day poetry. Sarah Wiseman and Heaven Vaillancourt also played a haunting duet of MacPherson's Lament. Finally, students reflected on the contributions of our veterans and those currently serving in peace-keeping roles during a 2 minute period of silence.
Drumming in Grades 1-3
Students in Grades 1-3 had the opportunity to learn about traditional drumming with Raven Martin from the Ininew Friendship Centre.
Halloween Costume Parade
Halloween at school is always a special event! It means costumes, pumpkins, fun activities and of course, ghoulish food! The following are some pictures from the Primary Costume Parade.
Special Programs in November
Our Child and Youth Worker, Lana Kershaw, delivered many special programs to various classes in November. As part of District School Board Ontario North East's Mental Health strategy, different classes receive different programs throughout the year. All three Kindergarten classrooms completed the Tucker the Turtle program. The goals of Tucker Turtle are to help young students handle their anger and impulse control in conflict situations. Students in Grade 1 and 2 completed the Kids have Stress Too program. This program teaches children to deal with stress effectively.
Students especially enjoyed using the expanding ball at sharing time.
Stretching time!
Students learned to listen to others as they shared their feelings.
Investigating Skeletons
Mrs. Foley's Grade 2 students had a lot of fun investigating the similarities and differences between animal skeletons in their recent Science unit.
Volleyball Tournament
Our Grades 7 and 8 volleyball teams recently hosted an Invitational Tournament at our school. Teams from Diamond Jubilee Public School, Nouveau Regard and Iroquois Falls Secondary School-Elementary attended. Much thanks to Mme. Louise Belisle, Mme. Christine Duval and Mr. Kenton Yade who were the coaches this year. Next intramural sport for this group will be basketball.
