St Weonards Primary School 2015 Brochure

At St Weonards we take great pride in our ability to inspire exploration, and delight in the successful discoveries of our children. We know each of our pupils individually and fully realise their potential in a happy and nurturing environment. We invite you to explore this website to find out more about us but there is so much more…so please do come and visit.

We believe that learning at our school is fun and exciting, challenging and rewarding. We offer a warm and caring environment which enables children to feel safe and secure as they grow, learn and develop. The foundation of our success is happy children working hard in surroundings, including strong links with the whole community, where everyone feels valued.

We are proud to be part of an exciting Federation of schools together with Lord Scudamore Academy, Sutton Academy, Kings Caple Academy, Llangrove CE Academy, Canon Pyon CE Academy and Marden Primary School. This has enabled us to join a lively and welcoming community of like-minded pupils, staff and parents who all wish to share in a broad and balanced curriculum as well as create really exciting opportunities for us all to work together. Through shared resources and specialist skills teachers, we really are ensuring our children get the most out of these links.

If you have any questions after browsing through our website please do not hesitate to ring the school and book an appointment. We hope you feel inspired to look around our school and meet our wonderful children and see them at work! We look forward to meeting you and your child.

Miss Maggi Newton, Executive Headteacher

Aims and Ethos

We seek to ensure that all children in our school develop their academic, social and personal potential to the full and grow into competent, tolerant adults who can work together co-operatively, manage their own lives and play their full part as responsible citizens and life-long learners.

St Weonards is a ‘values’ based school. We follow a programme through which, children and adults are inspired to choose their own positive personal, social, moral, cultural and spiritual values and to be aware of ways for developing and deepening them as members of the global as well as their local community.

“It is very much a family feel school. The children have confidence to talk to others (e.g. grown- ups). I always see happy little faces when I drop my children off at school and pick them up at the end of the day. “
“Children seem happy and there is a great atmosphere in the school.”
“My children are happy at school. The come home from school & explain in full what they’ve been doing.”

‘Growing together, learning together’

Curriculum

Our curriculum is a continually evolving blend of learning experiences, designed to develop the fundamental skills, which children need to succeed. The school curriculum is aimed to be relevant, interesting and engaging. A broad, balanced and relevant skills based education is offered to all the pupils, providing a wide range of experiences to meet their personalised needs. The core subjects and foundation subjects are all taught through a cross-curricular approach where it enhances learning or as discrete subjects. Our curriculum is further enriched by themed weeks which have been proposed by the children and in which they work collaboratively on a whole school topic. The school meets the requirements of the National Curriculum for Years 1 to 6, and the Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum for pupils in Reception.

Special Educational Needs

The staff at St Weonards Primary School are committed to providing care and education to all children, including those with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND).

A child has special educational needs if he or she has difficulties or disabilities that make it harder for him or her to learn than most other children of about the same age. Many children will have a special need of some kind during their education. Some children will need extra help and support from us for some or all of their time at St Weonards Primary School.

HMFA have a highly skilled SEN team led by Mrs Beecham is the SEN Manager and the Assistant SENCo (Mrs Higgins). The later is responsible for monitoring the SEND provision at St. Weonards on a more regular basis and is the first port of call for any concerns you may have about your child’s education and learning, once you have spoken to your child’s teacher. Mrs Higgins supports the school in a variety of ways and can be easily contacted at khiggins@lordscudamore.hereford.sch.uk. Mrs Higgins and Mrs Beecham work very closely together and share information regarding children with SEND on a regular basis.

As part of the support package we offer for children with SEND we have made the decision to employ an Educational Psychologist (Mrs Jane Mansfield) and a Speech and Language Therapist (Mrs Lisa Chapman). Both ladies work under the direction of Mrs Beecham and Mrs Higgins and support children with more specific barriers to learning. In addition to this we are also in contact with a range of external agencies who may be able to offer more specialised advice and support including Occupational Therapy, Physiotherapy, Visual Impairment Team, Hearing Impairment Team, Specialist Speech and Language Therapists, Community Paediatrics, Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service (CAMHS) and the Local Authority’s Social Communication Specialist (Carol Soble).

“Because it is a small school, staff have time to teach individuals when they need extra help.”
“It is lovely to have two happy children who enjoy going to school and that they feel included and safe at their school.”

Pastoral and Family Support

Our team here at St Weonards Primary School, are always available to speak to you regarding any concerns you may have.

The school is committed to providing a safe and secure environment for all children, staff and visitors to the school.

We are very ably supported by the Hereford Marches Federation of Academies pastoral team led by Mrs McColl (the Safeguarding Manager), who is based at Lord Scudamore Academy. She supports us with regular updates, on-going training and is the contact person that we can get extra support and advise from.

From time to time families may need extra support. We can provide extra pastoral support in school in the form of group work or even 1:1 sessions.
