Inclement Weather Procedures

As winter looms and the weather is changing, we want to share Epiphany School's Snow or Inclement Weather Closure Procedures with you.

Epiphany School follows the closure/delay decisions of Seattle Public Schools (SPS).

If Seattle closes its schools due to the weather, we’ll close Epiphany. If SPS announces a 2-hour delay, Epiphany School will officially start at 10:30 am. Please note that with a delayed opening, there will be no morning child care. Faculty is expected to be on campus by 9:45 am. Our primary concern is that all families and faculty/staff arrive safely, so take your time. We will obviously not be too concerned by late arrivals.

The "December Dilemma" and Multi-Cultural Curriculum

The November 25th In-Service provided the faculty and staff with the opportunity to delve deeply into the diversity initiatives that continue to guide Epiphany’s growth. Our long-time consultant, Heather Clark, Ph.D., Cultural Anthropologist from the University of Washington and Rainier Scholars Program, returned for her seventh session with Epiphany faculty. The topics were "the December Dilemma" and writing Multicultural Curriculum.

The “December Dilemma” is what educators face each December: the decision to recognize, include, and/or teach about holidays that fall within the month of December. Questions we face include:

• Should December holidays be present in the classroom or the school?

• Are they an intrusion on the First Amendment?

• Do they unintentionally display exclusion and privilege?

• Are they an opportunity to learn about and share religion and culture?

• All of the above?

Epiphany faculty and staff explored resources, responded to questions, and engaged in discussion about this topic. To learn more: http://www.edutopia.org/blog/december-dilemma-religious-holidays-anne-obrien

Multicultural Curriculum is a framework for assessing curriculum and instruction. It includes:

• Delivery: addressing learning styles and power and privilege in the classroom

• Content: ensuring the content is complete and accurate

• Teaching and Learning Materials: making sure materials are diverse and critically examined for bias

• Perspective: presenting materials from a variety of perspectives to be as accurate as possible

• Critical Inclusivity: facilitating experiences in which students learn from each other's experiences

• Social and Civic Responsibility: educating students about social justice issues and modeling a sense of civic responsibility in the curriculum

Epiphany faculty used the framework of Multicultural Curriculum to expand existing curricular units or develop new ones. Fourth Grade, Latin, and Art teamed up to develop a new interdisciplinary unit bringing together Homer’s Odyssey, the Great Migration of African-Americans in the 20th Century, and the art of Romare Bearden. Teachers explored the research on gender and math, expanded a unit on Immigration to include the perspectives of the host residents, and created activities on different physical abilities.

Thank you for your support of Epiphany’s professional learning. We recognize that In-Service days are challenging for families and value those days for the growth it brings our faculty, staff, and students.

Financial Aid For The 2016-2017 School Year

Epiphany School recognizes that the primary responsibility for a student’s private education rests with the student’s family. Yet, Epiphany school has a long history of providing financial support to families who qualify for financial aid. Financial Aid is awarded based on a family’s demonstrated financial need, including the financial sacrifices and choices a family makes to afford private education. Decisions are made by the school’s Financial Aid Committee which considers applications with names redacted.

Financial aid does not automatically renew each year. Whether you are a returning family currently receiving financial aid or a returning family wishing to apply for the first time, applications must be received by the dates listed below for committee consideration. Links to the FAST application and forms can be found on our website’s Financial Aid page https://www.epiphanyschool.org/index.php/prospective-families-experience/financial-aid/. Families will receive notification of award decisions on February 10, 2016.
