Sweeney Todd - Beware Where you Sit The Denver Center Theatre company

The Denver Center for the Performing Arts Theater Company has a big fat HIT to end the season with Stephen Sondheim’s SWEENEY TODD. The special collaboration with DeVotchKa is the foundation for a great deal of the buzz surrounding the production, and the brisk ticket sales.

“As an arranger, this was the most challenging thing I have ever attempted. As a musician, this was terrifying at first, but once I was steeped in the Sondheim sound, I am no longer afraid, and am in fact, loving the way our parts all fit together.” – Jeanie Schroder of DeVotchKa

Audiences are also loving the way their parts all fit together. This re-orchestrated SWEENEY TODD serves up the right amount of the special DeVotchKa musical flavor and keeps the Sondheim identity. It’s truly compelling to hear. When we realize the show is being played by just nine musicians it is stunning!

Robert Petkoff as Sweeney Todd and Linda Mugleston as Mrs. Lovett do more than simply lead the impressive cast, they are creating original portraits of characters who are deeply imprinted on many musical theater fans. The entire company dazzled the audience on opening night

The reason to beware of where you sit for this SWEENY TODD isn’t due to the amount of bloodshed on stage, but because this production has trouble with the space. Most of the scenes were played front and center. The DCTC is usually so adept at staging on the thrust that I’ve never thought of The Stage Theater as having “bad seats” however this time it felt as if our section was watching from the wings. (we were on the far aisle of section 1)

Even so, this is certainly a special EVENT those lucky enough to get a ticket for will be talking about for seasons to come, no matter where they sit. Since it is selling out quickly you may find yourself in a similar “limited view” seat, but you may also feel it’s worth it to experience this SWEENEY TODD.
