your cloak on the red carpet b-sides | 20 March 2016

After throwing their cloaks on the colt, they set Jesus on it. As he rode along, people kept spreading their cloaks on the road.
The Romans have entered Jerusalem on white horses weighed down with weapons so many times that they don't even bother coming out for those parades anymore. The result is inevitable.

1. What is something you hide behind, that you might want to lay down before Jesus, as he makes his way to the cross?

2. What are some symbols of power in today's world that might be analogous to the symbols of Roman power that Jesus subverts?

3. How do we practice both the humility that Jesus shows in the Palm Sunday procession, as well as the courage he exhibits as he walks toward the cross?

I can hide under my cloak; my cloak is a loose cover for my faults and imperfections. As long as we are all wearing one, our bodies are indistinguishable from each other and we can remain anonymous. I'm happy to sing but I'd like to keep my cloak if possible.

God, we are at your feet, reaching forward to touch you, believing that you see us, knowing that we need to be noticed by you. May your word inspire us to stay there, down low, near the ground, in service to others in the name of the one who saves us - Jesus the Christ, in whose name we pray. Amen.
