Aim: A Chinese student’s: “Guide to Campus”

To produce a film, or short series of films, for Chinese students coming to study at Coventry University and enlisting the help of current Chinese students to make them.

The Office of Teaching & Learning is a newly formed department focused on the engagement and experience of Coventry University students. Our priority is to maintain a consistent high quality academic and social environment for students to enjoy throughout their study at Coventry University.

Directed by the OTL, this project aims to connect prospective and current first year undergraduate/postgraduate Chinese students to Coventry Campus. Through providing an insight into student life and the expectations of a student at Coventry University. The project aims to provide useful information for Chinese students prior to moving to campus, and to include social/ academic perspectives of the university lifestyle they can look forward to experiencing for themselves.

The ultimate purpose of this project is to create a diverse network for first year/prospective Chinese students to engage with prior to beginning their Coventry University career.

"Feeling Familiar": Theme- what keywords can we think of?

Quality Student Experience!

Background:

Coventry and the University have a long-standing relationship with China, both academic and economic. Coventry is home to thousands of Chinese students who study at both Universities. The Chinese students who come to study at Coventry University might not know much about Coventry or the University before they come and the purpose of these films is to familiarise them with the City, the customs, the students and the campus.

Roles and Responsibilities:

We work as a Team..

Films are usually the best way of getting information across to International students as they are more engaging, informative and fun to watch, especially if they are made in a way that interests the viewer. By using current Chinese students, they will be able to talk about their experiences, their knowledge of the city and do mini guides to campus so that when the Chinese students come over, they are already familiar with the layout.

Student presenters

  • As a presenter you will be focused on creating an engaging and entertaining introduction to Coventry University Campus
  • • You will be co-director of the project and be responsible of who/ what should be included in the “Guide to Campus”
  • • Dedicated member of the team to maintain organisation of the project.
  • • Ability to present yourself confidently and in a professional manner at all times
  • • Ability to communicate well with other students, as part of a team.

Video Production Team:

  • • As a member of the video production team, you will be focused on creating an engaging and entertaining introduction to Coventry
  • • You will be responsible for the collection of the footage and co-operation with the OTL to ensure a high quality video is captured.
  • • You will be part of an enthusiastic team to film the making of the project and/or document the “behind the scenes” for the benefit of the OTL.* (time permitting)
  • Strong use of knowledge in Adobe software/ editing/ colour correction & sound
Lets Enhance the Student Experience!

Students tend to respond more to watching their peers talking about their experiences rather than a presenter who is just reading a script.

The aim of these films is to make sure that the University is seen as a home from home. Coming to a new country is a daunting experience but to come to a place that you already have an affinity with, either because you have friends here, or your degree is part-validated by Coventry, then the link is already there, it just needs to be strengthened. By getting this right, we can use the films and keep showing them to students in China, so that future students will also be able familiarise themselves with the city and the campus.

Story Ideas, Style & Scripts

The films need to be short, snappy and friendly. The presenters need to be engaging, entertaining and informative. *You have already expressed an interest in media & presentation performance which is why you're here!

The films should be both in English and Chinese. One of the reasons to do the films in English is to help the Chinese students with their language skills. *Chinese subtitles and translated accurately.

International Students @CU!

We need to look at films about the following subjects: Coventry as a city, Coventry as a place to live, Coventry University as a place to study looking at all aspects of student life, both academic and social. Also, the films should look at the ‘campus’ and be a guide to the buildings, especially those frequented by students such as The Hub.

The presenters can talk to some of the Chinese students currently studying in the form of short interviews as well as talking straight to camera/ Academics and tutors/ social engagement.

Resources & Timescale:

  • Market Research: what is already out there on the CU YouTube Channel?
  • What has already been made by students?
  • What can we bring that is current and contemporary to CU?
  • Establish roles within the team.
  • Audience: January Starters! Time is of the essence!

First things first...

Task 1: sculpting a script with the ideas we have brainstormed today. A "Guide to Campus" needs to be completed and reviewed by the OTL/ SU before we can continue and distribute.

*Reasonable deadline for this... lets discuss - we can be flexible within reason!

Lets Begin!
