The Arvada Center for the Arts and Humanities 41st season opened with the hit Broadway musical Sister Act
directed by Rod A. Lansberry
Sister Act is based on the 1992 Whoopi Goldberg film of the same name.
Brit West stars as Deloris Van Cartier, a disco diva witnesses her boyfriend/manager commit murder. (this makes her 3rd production playing Deloris, and she is fabulous baby)
Colorado favorite Megan Van De Hey plays the Mother Superior who runs the convent where police hid Deloris in protective custody till she can testify against her boyfriend. Megan plays her Mother Superior with a nice balance of stern authority and motherly love...and she is hilarious.
Of course all the nuns sing like angels... and this cast could easily sing on any Broadway stage.
The principal cast includes:
Brit West (Deloris Van Cartier)
Keith Hatten (Curtis Jackson)
David Kaverman (Eddie Souther)
Megan Van De Hey (Mother Superior)
Stephen Day (Monsignor O’Hara)
Sharon Kay White (Mary Patrick)
Kitty Skillman Hilsabeck (Mary Lazarus)
Emma Martin (Mary Robert)
Aaron Fried (Joey)
Anthony Alfaro (Pablo)
Napoleon Douglas (TJ)
The ensemble features: Norrell Moore, Krisangela Washington, Rob Costigan, Mark Rubald, Sarah Rex, Heather Lacy, Piper Lindsay Arpan, Reace Daniel, Benjamin Roeling, Brian Jackson, Maggie Davenport, Maggie Tisdale, and Chanel Karimkhani.
Yes, like the movie, Deloris and the Sisters create most of the magic - but the gentleman have their moments - including one crowd pleasing show stopper.
(not quite Magic Mike but more fun)
The Arvada Center's press release states-
Featuring original music by Tony and 8-time Oscar winner Alan Menken, dazzling dance routines and songs inspired by Motown, soul and disco, Sister Act is a funny, funky and heartwarming tribute to the universal power of friendship, sisterhood, and music.
The audience on opening night seemed to enthusiastically agree!
