Kenya with The Trumps #11 a Reporting Series on Visiting Missionaries

Friday: Life in Nairobi

Day started with a ride from Micah Odemba, husband of Britt, one of the missionaries I'm here reporting on. I headed to their home in Kibera, the largest slum in Africa to see and learn.

On the route, some of the best artisan work I've seen just on the side of the road.

Then some work in their home.

Some images from the inner parts of the slum. An estimated 1 million people live here. This is a result of no other option for working class affordable housing in the city.

The slum stretches for miles, winding through a section of the city.
One of the hundreds of streets like this.

We walked around for a bit and visited with a family in their home. Even in the slums, Kenyan hospitality shines: we were given wonderful mixed tea and buttered bread.

Then we visited the school Britt works with, a Lutheran school in the midst of the slum, Karama Academy Kibera.

School ends here in mid November and the new year begins in January, so next time I'm here I hope to visit with students here.

Then it was time for lunch. Chinese! This is a multi-cultural city!

Happy Birthday Josiah!!

We made it back to the Trump's home in time to celebrate Josiah's 6th birthday. Krista made this cake from scratch. I mean everything. The items on the cake are hand made and hand painted - there are no cake party stores in town!

Another great day learning about this city. We are off to a 4 day safari tomorrow in Maasai Mara National Reserve, so no reporting till I return on Tuesday! Till Tuesday....
