Casa de Almendras Explore Andalucia

This is the most recent chapter in the story of Casa de Almendras, a cortijo just outside the little town of Orgiva in la Alpujarra - Andalusia, Spain.

Orgiva

When we collected the keys...

I think it's fair to say, the cortijo had been slightly neglected when we arrived in July 2013. We had two choices - run screaming into the mountains or get to work...so we ran screaming into the garden and got stuck in!
Though we did leave time for a little bit of relaxation too!
A place to recharge...

It took us six months to restructure the house and clear the land. We acquired a derelict field next door that was being used to graze goats and dump rubbish and extended the garden to give us space for parking cars, growing fruit trees, creating a log store and a working area for the garden.

First stage clearance of the field

Eventually, our regular drenching of the land started to have the desired effect...

The outside took three months to bring back to life..
Phew!

Inside was another story! Rip it up and start again..

Spanish Plastering

We replaced the floors throughout with hand made terracotta tiles from Valencia, brought in a procession of craftsmen to do carpentry, plastering, plumbing...replaced the furniture and fittings...we smashed the budget but we got where we wanted to be...

After!

Inside the renovated Cortijo...

A well deserved cool drink...our own lemons too!

The Almond blossoms in Spring are just gorgeous..

And at the end of a long hot day, the sunsets in the Alpujarras are breathtaking...
