This is the most recent chapter in the story of Casa de Almendras, a cortijo just outside the little town of Orgiva in la Alpujarra - Andalusia, Spain.
When we collected the keys...
It took us six months to restructure the house and clear the land. We acquired a derelict field next door that was being used to graze goats and dump rubbish and extended the garden to give us space for parking cars, growing fruit trees, creating a log store and a working area for the garden.
Eventually, our regular drenching of the land started to have the desired effect...
Inside was another story! Rip it up and start again..
We replaced the floors throughout with hand made terracotta tiles from Valencia, brought in a procession of craftsmen to do carpentry, plastering, plumbing...replaced the furniture and fittings...we smashed the budget but we got where we wanted to be...
