Life in a Boarding House Repton School

Time to have fun, time to relax and time to make friends for life

House Activities

Repton's Boarding Houses are a hive of activity from early morning until late at night. Whether it be Inter-House competitions such as Unison (our annual House sing off) or Intra-House competitions in debating there is always something to get involved in

House Activities include: Quiz nights; Cooking Classes; Movie Nights; Table Tennis and Pool Leagues; Yard Football and Cricket; Room Competitions; House Debating; Takeaway Nights; House Plays; House Harmonies

HOuse Sport

Sport is an integral part of life at Repton and House Sport offers competition for pupils of all abilities. Being in a House team is a bonding experience and builds lifelong friendships

Inter-House Sport Competitions at Repton include: The Caroline Tyler Swimming Relays; House Hockey League; House Football League; House Basketball; Netball; Steeplechase and Swimming. Intra-House Sport Competitions are popular particularly in Boys' Houses and take the form of Yard Football and Cricket. Pupils are free to use the Gym and Swimming Pool and many pupils enjoy going for runs in the village.

House Dining

At the heart of Repton’s close family ethos is the traditional system of in-house dining. Each House meets together three times a day, for breakfast, lunch and tea. Every House has its own dining room and its own chef - we think you'll agree the food is quite spectacular

Lunch is the main formal meal of the day, giving the whole house a chance to come together, say grace, chat about the latest events and relax. House parents, tutors, visitors and other members of staff join the pupils, many rotating around the 10 houses on a weekly basis, giving the pupils the opportunity to chat with adults in a grown-up and informal manner, while ensuring that manners and habits are appropriate for formal mealtimes.

Breakfast and tea are generally a less formal affair. Breakfast consists of a wide range of options, with fruit, cereal and full cooked breakfasts on the menu, while tea favourites include brie and bacon baguettes, pasta bakes, jacket potatoes, fajitas and salad.

Each House regularly hosts themed lunches on special occasions and paired lunches allow pupils to visit friends and sample the cuisine on offer in other Houses. Toasty Tuesdays are a regular, as well as Steak Night in School House and New House's famed Sunday Roasts. Pupils' are given the chance to test their culinary and hosting skills with Inter-House 'Come Dine with Me'.

House Parents,Tutor Teams & Matron

The Boarding Houses are home to the Housemaster or Housemistress and their families. Each House has its own resident Matron, on hand 24 hours a day to care for the pupils’ welfare and practical needs and the House is further strengthened by a team of tutors, who take an active interest in all that the pupils undertake, individually or as a community

On their duty nights House Tutors are available to help pupils with prep work and offer advice and support. Wednesday lunch offers a time for tutor teams and the House to gather and catch up with the week's events. Matron also attends meals, supports the House in extra-curricular events and ensures the smooth running of the house and kitchen.

Weekend Fun

Weekends at Repton feature a full programme of activities including Socials, Sunday Leisure Options (SLOPS) and House events. Socials are held every term, normally in the Studio Theatre and featuring a guest DJ. SLOPs gives you the chance to do something a little bit different away from Repton

Activities include paintballing, white water rafting and trips to Alton Towers, Cheshire Oaks, The Clothes Show and the Birmingham Christmas market. Weekends in the House can include film and pizza nights, gaming on the Xbox, quiz nights in the JCR, chocolate fountain evenings, arts and crafts or tending to vegetables in the greenhouses. House leagues in all sports take place most weekends. Over the weekends pupils are able to take advantage of the School’s facilities for Art, Music, Sport, IT and Design. There are also various activities off site such as DoE and CCF field weekends.

Supporting charity

Michaelmas term is jam packed with fundraising efforts benefiting a range of different charities put forward by pupils and staff

The annual Sale of Work brings together the School and village community with various stalls, activities and raffles. The Priory hold their infamous Ducking Stall, where pupils delight in drenching their teachers, The Mitre sell their delicious homemade apple crumbles and there are Sale of Work dinners where parents are invited to Houses for an evening of delicious food and entertainment courtesy of the pupils. Dress to Impress is a weird and wonderful day where pupils are encouraged to attend school in their best fancy dress all in the name of charity. There are many other charity efforts taken up in-house such as the donation of cutlery, underwear, advent calendars, Macmillan Coffee mornings, and pupil led tuck shops where all profit goes to charity.
