An American Nurse At War The PHOTOGRAPHS OF WWI RED CROSS NURSE MARION MCCUNE RICE

Marion McCune Rice
The Kodak camera Marion used to document her nursing service in France.
Marion, back row at left, joined fellow Red Cross nurses in France.
The first chore was to clean the hotel rooms so they could be used as hospital rooms.
Wounded soldiers came in at all times of the day and night.
Surgeons tried to operate during the daylight hours as the lights were very inadequate.
Wounds were stitched up and the men recuperated.
In many cases, the soldiers lost limbs and never went back to fight.

The nurses were also activities directors trying to heal the soldier's mind as well as body.
Many soldiers recuperated in the hospitals and went back to fighting. Agathon Lepeve, left, was killed in action.
