Dark Tropics Queensland, January 2016

Six days through Queensland, along the east coast. Towns that become deserted after sunset. Billboards and golden arcs in the night.

We arrive to motels at the height of afternoon heat, and never leave the room before dusk. Locals have returned to their homes by this hour, to their homes which is out of the city, embedded into silence. We have dinner at the empty Red Rooster. Like it was one day before the Amageddon.

We are the only two people at the motel's pool. The water is motionless.

And sometimes, just sometimes, I get the feeling that the only living things here are the plants, the huge reptiles sleeping in the shade and the statue of Saint Mary, with her arms raised towards a white sun on the town's main square.
