RENOVATIONS AT haley ELEMENTARY SCHOOL began in the spring of 2015 and were completed in summer 2016. WORK included BOTH EXTERIOR AND INTERIOR IMPROVEMENTS TO THE FACILITY, WHICH OPENED IN 1969. THIS was THE FIRST TIME THAT THE EXISTING BUILDING HAd RECEIVED A FULL SCALE RENOVATION.
A major component of the REPAIR FWCS program is the replacement of aged and failing infrastructure. Prior to the renovation, Haley Elementary was experiencing frequent failures of plumbing systems due to the age of the iron piping mains. As part of the renovation, all domestic water piping, drains and plumbing fixtures were replaced.
All new plumbing fixtures and toilet room accessories, including warm air hand dryers and sensor operated faucets were installed in restrooms. All restrooms also received new finishes and upgrades for compliance with Americans with Disabilities Act requirements to ensure that facilities are fully accessible to anyone with disabilities.
Another major focus of the infrastructure renovations is the replacement of inefficient and failing heating and cooling systems. As part of the renovation, the failing systems at Haley Elementary were completely removed and replaced with new energy efficient central heating and cooling systems and all new temperature control systems.
BUILDING SECURITY IS ALSO A FOCUS OF THE REPAIR FWCS PROGRAM. Prior to the renovation, visitors to haley would enter the building and cross a hallway before entering the office, providing access to any part of the building as soon as the person entered. AS PART OF THE RENOVATION, The office suite was relocated to be adjacent to the main entry vestibule and A DOOR was ADDED FROM THE VESTIBULE INTO THE OFFICE. THE INNER VESTIBULE DOORS ARE LOCKED AT ALL TIMES, MAKING IT NECESSARY FOR ALL VISITORS TO THE BUILDING TO ENTER THROUGH THE OFFICE AND BE CHECKED IN PRIOR TO BEING ALLOWED ENTRY TO THE REST OF THE BUILDING.
prior to the renovations, the heating and cooling systems serving the classrooms were inefficient and provided inconsistent climate conditions. lighting levels were substandard, and classroom finishes and fixtures were showing the wear and tear of decades of use.
Renovated classrooms received new vertical unit ventilators for heating and cooling and brighter, energy efficient led lighting systems. asbestos-containing ceiling tiles and flooring were replaced with new ceilings and vct and carpet flooring. markerboards and tackboards replaced chalkboards, eliminating chalk dust, and new projection systems for teaching were installed in each room.
all of the exterior window systems were replaced with new thermally efficient insulated window systems and exterior walls were insulated. classrooms were outfitted with storage cubbies and coat hooks for student storage needs, as well as a teacher wardrobe unit. classroom doors were replaced and outfitted with new security hardware to increase safety and reduce the amount of time required to lock down the classroom in the event of an emergency.
The Media Center and other shared areas also benefited from the renovation. The Media center was relocated into a more central location in the building where the main office suite was located previously. the new media center features a larger circulation desk, brighter lighting, and more student learning and collaboration area.
The renovations to Haley Elementary School, along with full renovations at 9 other school buildings, the addition of chillers at 6 additional buildings, window replacements at 8 additional buildings and partial roof replacements at 27 buildings was made possible by the support of our community as a part of the REPAIR FWCS referendum program that was approved in 2012.
