Exploring the Setting

Royal Palace of Amsterdam

The Royal Palace of Amsterdam was built in the 17th Century. This was the palace of King Louis Napoleon.It also served as the town hall of Amsterdam.

The Secret Annex

This was the hiding place of Anne Frank and others for 2 years. They had to hide from the Nazis because of their racist policies and the Nuremberg Law. It is located in Amsterdam.

The Secret Annex was hidden behind a bookshelf and fooled many people.
Anne Frank stayed in the attic and wrote about the chestnut tree.

Nuremberg Law

This document was used to determine if you were a Jew, or a German by blood.

1. Marriage between Jews and subjects of the state of German or related blood are forbidden. Marriages nevertheless concluded are invalid, even if concluded abroad to circumvent the law. Annulment proceedings can be initiated only by the State Prosecutor.Extramarital intercourse between Jews and subjects of the state of German or related blood is forbidden.

2. Jews may not employ in their household female subjects of the state of German or related blood who are under 45 years old.

3. Jews are forbidden to fly the Reich or National flag or to display the Reich colors. They are, on the other hand, permitted to display the Jewish colors. The exercise of this right is protected by the State.

4.Any person who violates the prohibition under I will be punished by a prison sentence with hard labor. A male who violates the prohibition under I will be punished with a prison sentence with or without hard labor. Any person violating the provisions under III or IV will be punished with a prison sentence of up to one year and a fine, or with one or the other of these penalties. The Reich Minister of the Interior, in coordination with the Deputy of the Führer and the Reich Minister of Justice, will issue the Legal and Administrative regulations required to implement and complete the Law. The Law takes effect on the day following promulgations except for III, which goes into force on January 1, 1936. Nuremberg, September 15, 1935 at the Reich Party Congress of Freedom.

Propaganda

Propaganda is a type of misleading media that is created to emphasize a certain idea or view. Propaganda is very useful in making people think or believe certain things that have an agenda. Such as the Nazis did with the Jews. They can also be used to boost morale or convince people to think a certain way. They also can be used to convince people of a certain races inferiority. Propaganda was used many ways in history and is still in use in many ways today.

Characters

Peter Van Pels

He was sensitive and shy. Anne describes Peter as slow and methodical. Anne and Peter were in love with each other while in the secret annex and even afterward, until they were separated.

Otto Frank

He was the father of Anne Frank and he husband of Edith Frank. He was the only person in the Secret Annex to escape the Holocaust and survive. He lost two daughters and his wife.

After he escaped the death camps he has picture taken that was later retouched and color added.

Margot Frank

Margot Frank was the oldest daughter of Otto and Edith Frank, she was Anne Frank's Sister. She died at Bergen Belsen.

Margot Frank before she died in the Death Camps, this was before the Nazis came and they went into the secret annex.

Fritz Pfeffer

He was the Father of Warner who he managed to get sent to England before the war broke out. Fritz is the eighth resident of the secret annex and was divorced with his wife. He moved to the Netherlands to try to escape from the Nuremberg laws.

Fritz Pfeffer and his son who he sent away to London to keep safe.

Act I Summary

Scene 1- Mr. Frank returns to the secret Annex and remembers all of the troubles that they faced and finds Anne's Diary in a stack of books.

Scene 2-The Frank's meet the Van Daans in the secret annex, ration books are explained, and the residents are told to be quiet during certain times and the schedule and Anne receives her Diary.

Scene 3-Anne is being very bratty and annoying the other residents of the secret annex. Mr. Düssel joins the secret annex. Anne and Mr. Düssel are at odds with each other.

Scene 4-Anne has a terrible nightmare, but she pushes away her mom and instead talks to her father instead.

Scene 5- They have a Hannukah party but Peter breaks a light when the robber comes.

The Warsaw Ghetto Uprising

In 1943 an event happened called the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising. Where the Jews in the ghetto wanted to revolt against the Nazis and tried to escape. 13,000 Jews died during this event, most burned or suffocated. It was the largest single revolt in World War II. In total the Warsaw Ghetto claimed 300,000 lives.Less than 300 German soldiers died in the uprising. The dramatic act of resistance help raise the morale of Jews everywhere.

Act II Summary

Scene 1: Miep brings them a cake for the New Year, but Mr. Van Daan tries to get more for himself

Scene 2:Anne goes to see Peter a lot more Margot is okay with Anne and Peter's relationship.However their parents are worried with the way they act with each other and Anne gets her first kiss from Peter.

Scene Three: Mrs. Frank catches Mr. Van Daan stealing food and is furious. She is warning that she will get rid of them. She offers Peter to stay in the house.However, they are interrupted by the news that an invasion has begun.

Scene Four: A suspicious phone calls makes the hostages nervous. Some want to answer it, but Mr. Frank overrules. Mr. Van Daan blames Mrs. Van Daan for the prediciment that they are in, saying that they could have escaped. They nervously wait to see what will happen, then they are found by the green police.

Scene Five: After the war. Mr. Frank is back in the Annex. He stated that she was so much braver then he ever was. He was reading her diary and drinking coffee while they used the diary as a flashback.
