Rick Budde PHOTOGRAPHY

My photography:

I started photography as a hobby when I purchased my first digital camera in 2003. Before that I had never owned a camera of any type. I now spend a large portion of my hours on this hobby. I mainly take photos of animals, landscape, people and flowers along with Washington University volleyball.

Although it has been suggested many times, I do not try to sell any of my photographs.

Animal photos

I am fortunate to live close to the St. Louis Zoo nine months per year and Grand Teton & Yellowstone National Parks the other three months. Thus I am afforded many opportunities to photograph animals.

For my animal photography, I mainly use my Canon 70-200mm with the 1.4x teleconverter attached. Occasionally, I will lug the Canon 500mm lens along with its dedicated tripod and gimbal head.

Landscape photos

I am fortunate to live close to Grand Teton & Yellowstone National Parks three months of the year. I also travel to other National Parks and locations in the U.S. Thus I am afforded many opportunities for landscape photography.

I mainly use my Canon 24-70mm lens for this type of photography but I have recently purchased a 16-35mm to try as well. I use a carbon fiber tripod with a ball-head to steady my camera while shooting. The camera has an L-bracket attached to facilitate rapidly switching from landscape to portrait orientation.

People photos

I think candid photography is my strongest suit. I get to hear about 80 hours of live music during my summers in Driggs, Idaho. There are many folks in attendance so these events present a "target rich environment" for my candid photography.

I use my Canon 70-200mm lens with the 1.4x teleconverter attached for this type of photography. This type of photography is done hand held.

Plant photos

The Missouri Botanical Garden and Forest Park provide numerous photo opportunities while I am in St. Louis.

Grand Teton National Park and the National Forests I visit while in Driggs provide some amazing wildflower displays.

I use two different lenses for these types of photos: Canon 24-70mm and Canon 100mm Macro. I use a carbon fiber tripod to steady my camera while shooting.

Photography in St. Louis

There are a number of photo opportunities in and close by St. Louis. They may not be as spectacular as the National Parks I visit but here is a list I have complied.

Casa Budde West

During my working life, I would vacation from time to time in Grand Teton National Park. I developed a dream to someday purchase property in the Tetons. In 1996, that dream became a reality when I purchased a brand new townhouse in Driggs Idaho. Driggs is 35 miles from Jackson Wyoming, 50 miles from Grand Teton National Park and 100 miles from Yellowstone National Park. I now spend late-May through the first week in September there.

I would love to have you visit me in Driggs some summer. I truly enjoy having visitors.

About Rick
Broken wrist in 2005

I am a retired engineer and live in St. Louis, Missouri... actually University City. I retired at age 50 and thus my life began anew.

In 1996, I realized a long-term dream and purchased a vacation home in the Tetons. Now I spend summers in Driggs Idaho and enjoy the scenery, beautiful weather and the many friends who visit.

In retirement, I have developed an interest in photography. I enjoy taking landscape and animal photos but I really enjoy my candid photography. Over the years, I have made a number of new friends by first taking their photo and then starting a conversation with them.

My web site gives me a chance to share my photographic efforts with friends and other interested folks.
