The Royal Palace of Amsterdam

The Royal Palace is one of the three palaces in the Netherlands. The palace was built as a city hall during the Dutch Golden Age. It is located on the west side of Dam Square in the center of Amsterdam.

Anne Frank House

The Anne Frank House is where the Frank and Pfeffer families stayed during the Nazi invasion. The families stayed hidden because the house was hidden behind a bookcase. The Anne Frank house is also know as the Secret Annex.

Nuremberg Law

This document was used to identify the Jews.

1. Marriage between Jews and subjects of the state of German or related blood are forbidden. Marriages nevertheless concluded are invalid, even if concluded abroad to circumvent the law. Annulment proceedings can be initiated only by the State Prosecutor.

2. Extramarital intercourse between Jews and subjects of the state of German or related blood is forbidden.

3. Jews may not employ in their household female subjects of the state of German o related blood who are under 45 years old.

4. Jews are forbidden to fly the Reich or National flag or to display the Reich colors. They are, on the other hand, permitted to display the Jewish colors. The exercise of this right is protected by the State.

5. Any person who violates the prohibition under I will be punished by a prison sentence with hard labor. A male who violates the prohibition under I will be punished with a prison sentence with or without hard labor. Any person violating the provisions under III or IV will be punished with a prison sentence of up to one year and a fine, or with one or the other of these penalties. The Reich Minister of the Interior, in coordination with the Deputy of the Führer and the Reich Minister of Justice, will issue the Legal and Administrative regulations required to implement and complete the Law. The Law takes effect on the day following promulgations except for III, which goes into force on January 1, 1936. Nuremberg, September 15, 1935 at the Reich Party Congress of Freedom.

Propaganda

Propaganda is the ideas or rumors spread widely to harm a person or group. The Nazi's used propaganda to promote the idea to the German citizens that the Jews had to be exterminated. According to the video, Hitler used employment to convince people that he was saving them. If the German's worked hard, Hitler would reward them with a vacation. Hitler also changed elementary textbooks to criticize the Jews. Hitler started making people believe Jews were bad when they were young.

Anne Frank

Anne Frank was born on June 12, 1929. Anne was 3 and a half years younger than her sister, Margot. She had a very good relationship with her parents before they went into hiding, but as she got older, she began distance herself from her father. While in hiding, Anne fell in love with one of the people in hiding with their family, Peter Van Pels.

Miep Gies

Miep Gies was a secretary that worked at Otto Frank's company. She was the person that helped the Frank's the most in hiding. She borought them food and other essentials daily. When the Frank's were arrested, Miep and her husband found Anne's diary and later returned it to Otto Frank.

Peter Van Pels

Peter was the son of Auguste and Hermann Van Pels. Peter and his family went into hiding with the Frank's in the Secret Annex. He was sent to Auschwitz and survived the selection. When Auschwitz was evacuated, he had to join the "death march" to Mauthausen. He died in Mauthausen.

Otto Frank

Otto Frank was Anne and Margot's father. He owned an Opekta company, but when Jews were forbidden from owning their own business, he appointed Mr. Kleiman and Kugler as directors of the company, but he is still secretly in charge. He was the one who came up with the idea for the Frank's and the Van Pel's to go into hiding in the Secret Annex.

Act I Summary

In Act 1 of The Diary of Anne Frank, Anne's family and the Van Daan's go into hiding in the Seceret Annex when the Nazi's invade Europe. They are supplied with food and other necessities by Miep Gies and Mr. Kraler. In the first few months in the Annex, Anne acts childish and immature. As she grows older, she becomes more mature and less childlike. After about a year and a half, Anne starts having an interest in Peter, but his parents are not sure what to think of this.

The Warsaw Ghetto Uprising took place from April 19th to May 16th, 1943. More than 80,000 Jews died in the Warsaw Ghetto. 17 German soldiers were killed in the uprising, while about 13,000 Jews were killed and about 56,885 Jews were deported. After the uprising, Jewish morale was crushed because of all the casualties they had suffered.

Anne Frank Act II Summary

In Act II of The Diary of Anne Frank, Miep brings the Frank's and the people in hiding a cake. This is a delightful surprise for them because they have not had something sweet for over a year. Mr. Kraler brings them news that somebody is on to them and wants double the pay to keep it a secret. Mr. Frank instructs Mr. Kraler to just give him half. Mr. Vaan Dan steal food when everybody is starving. Mrs. Frank gets furious over this because he is stealing food from the children as well. At the end of the book, the Nazi's find the people in hiding and send them to concentration camps. Anne leaves her diary behind and Miep keeps it, waiting for when they come back. Mr. Frank is the only person to come back.
