Restaurant On a Mission Flora Restaurant Helping Oakland's Youth
Giving back to the community is part of Flora's mission, by supporting the WOW Farm Project we can accomplish this and offer incredible ingredients at the same time.
Housed in an Art Deco architectural gem in the Uptown district of Oakland, Flora serves a selection of new American dishes incorporating locally produced and sustainable ingredients.
A key partner in Flora's mission is the WOW Farm Project - an urban farm that offers local high school youth an opportunity to learn about and operate a small farm business.
WOW Farm began in 1999, when founder Philip Krohn converted a derelict West Oakland lot into a community garden. Its founding vision was to conserve urban green space by creating an organic farm. In 2012, Krohn partnered with Game Theory Academy to create an educational youth jobs program supplying fresh produce to local businesses. WOW Farm’s youth program teaches Oakland teens the principals of urban organic farming while offering meaningful, paid employment and hands-on experience running a small business.
Flora Restaurant is located in Uptown Oakland at 1900 Telegraph Ave, Oakland, CA. Owners Dona Savitsky and Thomas Schnetz also own neighboring bar Fauna, Xolo taqueria, Tacubaya taqueria, and restaurante Doña Tomás in Oakland's Temescal district.
WOW Farm is a program of the nonprofit Game Theory Academy. It has a mission to provide decision-making skills and economic opportunities to low-income and at-risk youth.
