CPS News MARCH, 2016

Pictured above in our Cover Photo is the mural created by students in Mme. Duval's Gr. 7/8 class for the Cochrane Winter Carnival. Well done CPS!

The students of Mr. Martin's Alternative Education Program and Mrs. Foley's Grade 2 class have become part of a new program called Eco-Explorations: A Classroom Without Walls. It is an outdoor education program that enables the students to learn their curriculum through rich outdoor experiences. The classes have been exploring inquiry-based learning at various off-site locations on a weekly basis.

Grade 5 & 6 Volleyball Teams Win Gold and Silver!

On February 12, the Grades 5 and 6 Volleyball teams participated in a Volleyball tournament in Smooth Rock Falls. They played against teams from Kapuskasing and Smooth Rock Falls. Their hard work paid off and both teams took the top two spots in the tourney. Thank you to the Stewart family for sponsoring our teams and making it possible for them to travel to a tournament!

January Attendance

At our last Awards and Attendance assembly, we had 98 students with Perfect Attendance. That is 34% of our JK-Gr. 6 students at our school which is amazing! Coming to school everyday demonstrates commitment to learning and responsibility. It also shows us that caregivers also value school and are imparting this value to their children. Well done!

Card Stacking Fun!

Students in Mrs. Wiseman's Gr. 6 afternoon class take time each afternoon to watch and appreciate different styles of artistry. After watching some videos about a world record holding card stacker, they decided to give it a try. The students were completely dedicated to the craft, and persevered with a basic "cell" formation of card stacking. Some even got to the second level in their structures!

Making a Movie

Daxon and Madison are completely focused as they work to create a presentation for their classmates in Mrs. Foley's Gr. 2 classroom. This is just one example of how technology can enhance learning!

Mrs. Demers' Gr. 3's Become Visiting Authors!

Students in Mrs. Demer's Gr. 3 Language class recently shared their narrative stories with students in Mrs. Gemmell's Gr. 3 class. After completing a Narrative story unit, students had the opportunity to read aloud their stories to peer partners and describe the parts and process of narrative writing. Mrs. Gemmell's class is just starting their own similar unit and appreciated seeing the results of a few weeks of hard work.

Students also answered questions about the writing process.

Students put a lot of detail into their cover and story illustrations.

Students were very proud of their finished narratives!

A Peak at Some of Our Wonderful Bulletin Boards

If you have the chance to walk the hallways of CPS, you will be treated to wonderful displays of student work! The material put up on our bulletin boards reflects the work being done in our classrooms related to various curriculum strands from Math to Art. The level of pride, accomplishment and understanding is very apparent when one takes the time to look at classroom displays.

Paramedics Visit Kindergarten!

Mr. Yade teaches about community helpers. Here are paramedics Brian & Justin visiting Mme. Colton & Mme. Charron's class.

Chocolate Bar Investigation

Mrs. Wiseman's class has been busy lately! While exploring volume and surface area in Math, the students role played a real life situation where a company was creating a new design for their chocolate bars. The company wanted to find out which chocolate bar, with a volume of 36 cubic units, would require the least amount of packaging to wrap. Students determined all the design possibilities of chocolate bars with 36 cubic units. They surveyed passerbys with the question posted in the hall. In small groups, the students went to work determining the surface area of all of their designs in order to answer the question of which chocolate bar would be the one to use the least amount of packaging. The results were then posted in the hall for others to see. What a great investigation that required problem solving, collaboration, number sense, measurement and data management concepts!

Critical Thinking

Our March character education trait is "Critical Thinking". Critical thinking is knowing how to think, not what to think. If your child is thinking critically, he/she will be:

  • Solving problems
  • Testing their thinking
  • Thinking in new and different ways (knows there are different ways to get an answer)
  • Demonstrating curiosity about different things and a desire to search for more information
  • Able to work with others
  • Responding well to open ended questions
