For the development of management In 1997 the "Society of port and site development" (GHS) was founded. Since 2004 it is registred under HafenCity Hamburg GmbH. The definition of objectives are very largely. A new peace of urban developemant has to find architectoral establishments. Old warehouses have to be removed, a subway has to supply the future residents and the complete infrastructure for more than 14.000 inhabitants must be installed. A bit more than half of the planned buildings are completed today. I picked some of the remarkable buildings to show on the next pages.
The most remarkable building in the new Hafencity is obviously the Elbphilharmonie. It is set on the old warehouse Kaispeicher. The new building includes three concert halls, a hotel, apartments and a plaza in 37 meters hight.
The Elbphilharmonie will be the new landmark of the Hansestadt Hamburg.
The building was created by Herzog & de Meuron architects, Basel and the master planning by Höhler + Partner architects and engineers
See what the warehouse Kaiserspeicher looked in the beginning of 20th century
Another distinctive architectural design are the Unilever house and the Marco Polo Tower. The 17 storeys building stands in front of the Unilever building. Both are designed by Behnisch architects from Stuttgart.
The turned levels of the tower lat him look like a sculpture. The project won prices such as Green Good Design Award, MIPIM Award Category Residential Development or the European Prime Property Award "Best high-rise development Germany"
Another building I like very much is the Sumatrakontor, located at Überseeboulevard. The pedestrian walkway leads right into a shopping area with restaurants and cafés. The building accommodate apartments and offices. Its attractive design comes from the Rotterdam based Erick van Egeraat associated architects
