The Unit Operations Lab Summer Course is designed to engage international junior or senior students in the field of chemistry, chemical engineering and materials science engineering, in the theory and practice of advanced chemical engineering and semiconductor processing techniques through a hands-on four-credit-hour course.
Course Information
- This is a 4-credit course.
- Students will be led on tours to various companies.
Past tours have included: Arizona Chemical, Ascend, Axogen, Ch2MHill, Mosaic, RTI Surgical and Nanotherapeutics
- The course has 4 instructors and 36 students. There will be 12 groups, and each group will have an experienced teaching assistant.

Course Fee
The $7933 course fee includes: all lab fees, room and board on campus, company tours and trip tickets for the cultural program.

Harn Museum of Art
The Harn Museum of Art at the University of Florida is an 112,800-square-foot-facility, which includes 40,400 square foot of exhibition space, 5 garden spaces, a 250-seat auditorium, study center, museum store, café and classroom spaces. The Harn’s collection totals more than 9,000 objects including African, Asian, modern and contemporary art, and photography with significant representations of Ancient American and oceanic art, as well as a growing collection of natural history works on paper.

Fan Ren
Fan Ren is a Distinguished Professor and Fred & Bonnie Edie Professor. Dr. Ren has 2 years of experience in petrochemicals and 13 years in the semiconductor field. He has published more than 880 journal papers, edited 4 books and 21 Conference Proceedings Volumes, contributed to 40 book chapters, and holds 37 US and European patents. He is a recipient of: the Gordon E. Moore Medal for Outstanding Achievement in Solid State Science and Technology from ECS; the Albert Nerken Award from AVS; the Electronics and Photonics Division Award from ECS; the NASA Tech Brief Initial Award; the NASA Patent Application Initial Award; the University of Florida Teaching and Scholar Award; and the Doctoral Dissertation Advisor/Mentoring Award and Research Foundation Professor Award from UF. He is a Fellow of the APS, AVS, ECS, IEEE, MRS and SPIE.
Dmitry Kopelevich
Dmitry Kopelevich is an Associate Professor and the director of the Undergraduate Laboratory in the Department of Chemical Engineering. He holds a dual degree in Chemical Engineering and Mathematics. His current research interests include molecular and multi-scale modeling of molecular self-assembly and Engineering Education, with an emphasis on integration of lecture and laboratory learning experience.
Jason E. Butler
Jason E. Butler is a Professor of Chemical Engineering and is a research and education specialist on the dynamics of complex fluids, with applications in rheology, slurry flows, microfluidics, nanotechnology, and basic science. He has had two years of experience in the petrochemical industry, has consulted for industry, and has authored over 50 articles that appear in leading publications in fluid mechanics and physics. Dr. Butler has served frequently as Visiting Professor at Aix-Marseille University (Marseille, France), received the NSF CAREER Award in 2002, and was a Chateaubriand Fellow.
Peng Jiang
Peng Jiang is a Professor of Chemical Engineering and his current research focuses on developing scalable nano-manufacturing technologies based on various material self-assembly platforms for a spectrum of applications ranging from highly sensitive infrared spectroscopy for space exploration to ultrasensitive chemical and biological sensors for homeland security and biomedical diagnosis. He has had more than three years of industrial R&D experience at Corning and GE, has consulted for industry, and has authored over 80 articles in prestigious journals including Science, Nature Photonics and Nature Communications. Dr. Jiang is a recipient of the prestigious 2008 NSF CAREER Award.
