Olympic Coach gets down to grass roots

real gym explodes the myths around teaching gymnastics skills and supports teachers to deliver high quality gymnastics lessons where all children can be enriched, enabled and extended in PE. This vibrant programme develops Fundamental Movement Skills via gymnastics activities providing children with a springboard for future opportunities.

real gym is an innovative, vibrant, inclusive programme which supports teachers to become competent and confident to deliver gymnastics activities and create rounded learners.

Gymnastics activities prepare children for other sports and life.

Sarah Moon

real gym has been written and developed by Sarah Moon to give ALL children, the experience of fantastic gymnastics lessons. real gym is making a big impact (over 800 practitioners have taken part in the real gym programme over the last year) and this opportunity with Create Development will enable thousands of children and teachers to enjoy high quality gymnastics lessons which to date have been limited to the few rather than the many.

Sarah left the high performance sport of gymnastics as she realised that the Olympic Games in 2012 had made a huge impact, but one that needed to be developed and the way to do that was through supporting teachers in primary schools. Rather than working with a group of 10 or 100 children in a club, she believes she can support thousands of teachers a year, who in turn can reach hundreds of thousands of children each year and for years to come. Getting children passionate about physical activity through gymnastics activities would really be a legacy to be proud of.

Sarah’s accolades include:

  • Master Coach in Rhythmic Gymnastics, presented by British Gymnastics 2013
  • TEAM GB Coach for the rhythmic gymnastics group for the Olympic Games, (London) in 2012
  • Head Rhythmic Gymnastics Coach for England, for the Commonwealth Games (Delhi) in 2010

“We can’t escape the fact that in many areas the sporting world is in crisis. Now, it's more important than ever to go back to the grass roots and look at how we are nurturing a positive relationship and love of sport and PE in all young people. This is exactly what the real gym programme does. Without this new approach, the legacy that we talked about after the London 2012 Olympics will not exist.” Sarah Moon

  • Competed at Commonwealth Games Glasgow 2014 for England – fifth individual in ribbon final
