2016 Colors of the Year by michael shawn kelly

New Year. New colors.

At the beginning of every year, Pantone selects their Colors of the Year. Pantone is THE color authority in all-things color matching. This year, for the first time, they have released a pair of colors for their 2016 selection.

Rose Quartz & Serenity

Joined together Rose Quartz and Serenity demonstrate an inherent balance between a warmer embracing rose tone and the cooler tranquil blue, reflecting connection and wellness as well as a soothing sense of order

-Leatrice Wiseman Executive Director, Pantone Color Institute

Rose Quartz is a persuasive yet gentle tone that conveys compassion and a sense of composure.
Serenity is weightless and airy, like the expanse of the blue sky above us, bringing feelings of respite and relaxation even in turbulent times.

Embracing. Tranquil. Connection. Wellness. These are all qualities that we often find in a garden. In fact, these shades are likely already in your backyard garden and favorite flower arrangements.

Fairy Magnolia Blush

This hybrid of Michelias produces a copious amount of fragrant buds along the stem. The petals are lightly graced by one of our 2016 Color(s) of the Year: Rose Quartz.

The Fairy Magnolia Blush makes for a beautiful hedge as well. They grow upright, and when planted at a 3 foot difference, they can create a compact privacy screen.

Flower Carpet Appleblossom

This is a favorite amongst less... shall we say, "killer" gardeners. This breed is incredibly easy to grow and maintain. They have "unprecedented levels" of natural disease-resistance.

One of the best features of this variety is it's habit of "self-cleaning". That means there's hardly any need for pruning or deadheading.

Serenity

Against the soft pink of Rose Quart, Pantone has paired a lovely blue in the form of Serenity.

A familiar specimen to most of us is the Blue Storm Agapanthus. It's another easy-to-care-for plant that can flower for as long as ten weeks.

Agapanthus's exotic shape and height allows for opportunities in both garden designs and container pot arrangements.

Let us know if you have any other favorite varieties that show off 2016's Colors of the Year. And be sure to keep up to date with more blog posts and podcasts on our Facebook Page.
