In the first term of the HSC year we look at designing characters for a range of product. This can include designing characters for cartoons/animation, flat-pak toys, web graphics etc. We look at developing and transitioning concept sketches into product via Adobe Illustrator.
The intent of the curation of this selection of images is to to enable a sense of the diversity of approaches to this task.
ADOBE ILLUSTRATOR
Despite the apparent complexity of the interface, Adobe Illustrator is deceptively easy to learn and adapt to. Part of the reason for this is that Illustrator, unlike Photoshop; is a dedicated Illustration + Vector Graphics application and the interface + workflow reflects that focus.
The intent of your introduction to Adobe Illustrator is to give you the tools to create your own illustrations/artwork with complete independence and creative freedom.
LOGICAL EXTENSIONS OF CONCEPT
The designing of 'characters' is inextricably linked to the history of animation and comics. To this end, the related research component of this task focuses on the 'history of animation' and looks at the impact of trends in aesthetics and the intent of animators / designers working in the fields of:
- Web Design/ Graphics
- Animation
- Comics
- Toy design
Students are encouraged to develop work that is representative of their personal interest and aesthetic. The intent here is to enable the growth of a distinct and identifiable iconography.
TAKING IT TO THE STREET
Students who undertake the Design course at Wyndham are able to take learned skill sets and utilize them in other areas of study.
