character design overview adobe illustrator

All specific student directions, submission dates and syllabus outcomes have been removed and this overview can be used as is.

This is a task overview and does not replace any existing coursework documents.

In the first term of the HSC year we look at designing characters for a range of product. This can include designing characters for cartoons/animation, flat-pak toys, web graphics etc. We look at developing and transitioning concept sketches into product via Adobe Illustrator.

The intent of the curation of this selection of images is to to enable a sense of the diversity of approaches to this task.

ADOBE ILLUSTRATOR

Despite the apparent complexity of the interface, Adobe Illustrator is deceptively easy to learn and adapt to. Part of the reason for this is that Illustrator, unlike Photoshop; is a dedicated Illustration + Vector Graphics application and the interface + workflow reflects that focus.

Chloe

The intent of your introduction to Adobe Illustrator is to give you the tools to create your own illustrations/artwork with complete independence and creative freedom.

Different Approaches

Jessi extended concepts developed in her 'Character Design' task into her 'Personal Project' and worked with Sketchbook Pro on her iPad to complete a series of images that would allow her to work within a mobile environment.

JESSI

The designing of 'characters' is inextricably linked to the history of animation and comics. To this end, the related research component of this task focuses on the 'history of animation' and looks at the impact of trends in aesthetics and the intent of animators / designers working in the fields of:

  • Web Design/ Graphics
  • Animation
  • Comics
  • Toy design
