Introduction

What do you get when you put creative minded international students and urban planning-oriented academics in the same room with a goal to create new ways to develop an area? Absolute chaos? Or, a new perspective on the present day and creative visions for the future? This document portrays the work of the multi-disciplinary workshop: ‘Connected Neighbourhoods – What is a 100 meters?’. All the work was done in a 12 hour period between the 27 and 28 of April in Mediapolis, Tampere.

The challenge

The challenge was to find creative solutions and ideas to connect the former Abloy factory area with Mediapolis and to celebrate the neighbourhood of Tesoma and put it on the map.

Research

To tackle our challenge we used a variety of different methods for ideation and working. We started the first day of the workshop by embarking on a walking seminar to observe the urban landscapes of the target areas. The walk provided our group with many new perspectives since everybody experienced the places in their own way. We discussed our experiences and started forming our objective for the next day. The second day we chose different roles for the day’s work. Some people set out back to Tesoma to interview the locals to collect stories about their day-to-day living and views about the neighbourhood. Others stayed in Mediapolis to brainstorm ideas for the future of the Mediapolis and Abloy area.

Development

The second day included us collating all the information and content, editing it through and deciding what we wanted to use as the outputs of the workshop.

Outputs

As our final output we combined our best ideas to present. They include concept drawings, interviews, photos, audio soundscapes and a projection mapping prototype.

Olen lapsesta asti pyörinyt täällä Tesomalla. Lapsena asuin tuossa Kalkun puolella, mutta koulun hiihtokilpailuja hiihdettiin täällä Tesoman kirkon kulmalla. Olen asunut nyt 28 vuotta Tesomalla ja siinäkin ajassa Tesoma on muuttunut todella paljon. Näitä taloja ruvettiin rakentamaan kun asuin vielä Kalkussa. Serkkutyttö muutti tähän talon heti kun se valmistui ja toinen siihen taloon, jossa minä asun nyt. Suosikkipaikkani Tesomalla on Tesomajärven ranta. Meitä on sellainen mummulauma, joka käy siellä juoksemassa. Aikaisemmin täällä oli kaiken maailman kauppoja, mutta kaikki ne on nyt mennyt pois. Mut nyt on taas tulossa. Lääkäriasemakin takaisin. Parasta on, että tässä on kaikki lähellä. Silloin kun mä tähän tulin, niin mä sanoin, että pitkälle mä en täältä mene.

I have been hanging out here in Tesoma since I was a kid. Then I used to live right next to Tesoma in Kalkku, but the cross-country skiing competitions were here next to the church of Tesoma. I have been living here in Tesoma 28 years now and even in that time the place has changed a lot. When I was still living in Kalkku they started to build these buildings. My cousin moved to this building right after when it was built and an other cousin moved to the house I’m living at the moment. My favourite place in Tesoma is on the Tesoma lake. We are kind of herd of grannies who go jogging there. There used to be every kind of stores here in Tesoma, but nowadays they are all gone. But there will be stores again and also a medical centre. The best thing is that there are everything in close proximity. It was right after i moved here when i said i won’t go far from here ever.

Me ollaan asuttu täällä Tesomalla nyt vuoden verran. Tää on ihan mukavaa aluetta. Tässä on palveluita ja bussit kulkee. Tossa Tesoman kadun varrella on hyvä leikkipuisto, jossa me tykätään käydä mun lapsen kanssa. Tesomalla on tosi hyvä yhteishenki. Naapurit juttelee toistensa kanssa ja ihmiset on avoimia. Vähän täällä voisi olla siistimpää ja turvallisempaa, mut muuten ihan kiva asua.

We have been living here in Tesoma for a year now This is quite okay of an area. There are services and buses are good to get around with. Along the Tesoma main street, there is a nice playground, that me and my child like to visit. Tesoma has a good spirit of community. The neighbours talk to each other and people are open minded. It could be a tad cleaner around and safer, but otherwise it is good to live here.

”Täällä on pelkkää metsää. Kun lähden tuosta kävelemään, niin saan kävellä Moskovaan asti, ennen kuin mä nään yhtään ihmistä!”

Tällä hetkellä Tesomalla ei ole mitään lempipaikkoja kenellekään. Täällä on ikävää ja likaista. Viimeisen kymmenen vuoden aikana Tesoma on mennyt alamäkeä. Kun katsoo ulos, niin siellä on pelkkää pusikkoa. Mitään ei ole siivottu, mitään ei ole saatu aikaiseksi. Tänne piti nyt rakentaa kaikenlaista, mutta se on melkein kaikki vesittynyt. Ihmiset valittaa kaikista uudistuksista. Musta, jos valittaa, niin sitten pitäisi antaa hyvä vaihtoehto, ja kertoo, että millä tavalla nostettais sitä lähiön imagoo. Ainoo hyvä mikä täällä vois olla, ois se jos nuoret ihmiset muuttaisi tänne. Täällä on niin paljon halvemmat asuntojen hinnat. Mutta siinä hinnassa näkyy myös se alueen arvostuksen puute. Tänne pitäisi ehdottomasti saada lisää ihmisiä! Täällä on pelkkää metsää. Kun lähden tuosta kävelemään, niin saan kävellä Moskovaan asti, ennen kuin mä nään yhtään ihmistä!

At the moment nobody has favourite places here in Tesoma. It is sad and dirty in Tesoma. During the last ten years Tesoma has become even worse. When you look out the only thing you see is bushes. Nothing has been cleaned nor got done. They were supposed to built here every king of things but nothing has really been done. People are complaining about all of the new projects. In my opinion, if you complain then you should also give a constructive option on how to lift the image of the suburb, The only thing that would make it better if young people would start to move in. The housing is so much cheaper here. Part of the low prices is the low appreciation of the area. There should definitely be more people around! There is nothing but woods around here. If I go on walking, I can walk all the way to Moscow without seeing a person!

”Mä päätin joskus, et Hervannassa mun lapset ei tuu kasvaan, mut kyllä ne täällä voi kasvaa.”

Oon asunut Tesomalla viisi vuotta, mut mun isovanhemmat muutti tänne 40 vuotta sitten, et oon viettänyt kaikki viikonloput ja lomat täällä lapsesta asti. Et täältä on hyviä muistoja, kun täällä on asunut mun elämäni tärkeimmät henkilöt. Kun olin lapsi, täällä oli talvitapahtuma ja mun pappa maksoi mut helikopterilennolle. Se oli hienoo, kun en ollut aikaisemmin ees nähnyt helikopteria. Mut ehkä sitä vähän romantisoi lapsuuden asioita. Onhan tää vähän tämmönen betoniviidakko. Ja onhan täällä noita laitapuolen kulkijoita, mutta sehän nyt kuuluu lähiön maisemaan. Mä päätin joskus, et Hervannassa mun lapset ei tuu kasvaan, mut kyllä ne täällä voi kasvaa. Lasten kanssa tykkään käydä tossa järvellä, kun se on meidän kotiovelta 200 m.

“At some point I made up my mind, that my kids are not to going to grow up in Hervanta, but they can grow up here.”

I've lived in Tesoma for five years now, but my grandparents moved here around 40 years ago, so I've spent all my weekends and holidays here since I was a child. I have good memories from here, 'cause the most important people in my life have lived here. When I was a kid, my grandpa' took me on to a helicopter flight. It was cool, 'cause it was the first time I'd even seen a helicopter. But maybe I'm romanticizing the childhood a bit. This is a sort of a concrete jungle. At some point I made up my mind, that my kids are not to going to grow up in Hervanta, but they can grow up here. With the kids it's nice to go to the lake, since it's 200 meters away from our door.

Me ollaan asuttu täällä toinen jo pari vuotta ja toinen muuttanut vasta viime kuussa. Me tykätään käydä tuolla Tesoman uimarannalla. Ja sitten täällä kauppakeskuksessa. Tää on kiva ja rauhallinen alue. Keskustaan pääsee aina bussilla. Täällä ei kuitenkaan ole paljoakaan paikkoja, missä voisi hengailla ja olla vaan. Nuoret on yleensä tuolla kauppakeskuksessa ja aikuiset on baareissa. Tänne pitäisi saada vaikka jotain nuorisotiloja, joissa voisi pitää keikkoja. Tesomalla on paljon hevareita ja pultsareita.

We’ve been living here, one of us, already for a couple of years, and the other one has just moved in. We like to go to the Tesoma swimming beach. And the here in the mall. This is a nice and peaceful area. You can always get to the centre by bus. However there aren’t too many places to just hang around. The young are usually there in the mall and the grown ups are in the bars. There should be some room for the youth to have some gigs. In Tesoma there are a lot of metalheads and drunks.
