Shawn defended his Indiana High School Athletic Association state tournament 285-pound title as a senior at Merrillville High School.
He pinned seven consecutive opponents at the State Finals during his back-to-back title runs. As a junior he pinned four opponents en route to the 2015 title. In February Shawn had three straight first-period falls on his way to the championship match.
He took third as a sophomore (44-2) and was seventh as a freshman (40-6) at the IHSAA tournament.

"I love Shawn's passion. He’s excited about the sport of wrestling. He really follows it. A lot of our conversations have been about the world championships and freestyle wrestling. He follows wrestling, he’s a wrestler." - Tony Ersland

Shawn has captured All-America honors with three top-five finishes at 285 pounds. At the 2013 ASICS/Vaughan Cadet Nationals he earned podium finishes in both freestyle and Greco-Roman, placing third and fourth, respectively.
Shawn also registered a third-place finish at 285 at the 2014 Cliff Keen USA Wrestling Folkstyle Nationals.

"Heavyweight is a very coveted slot. A lot of those guys go on and play football so when you get a good athlete who can move his feet like Shawn can and they still love wrestling, I think there is tremendous potential there and that’s what we see in Shawn. That’s why we’re so excited to have him." - Tony Ersland

"At Purdue I'll be able to reach my goals in front of all my family and friends and that really stuck out to me. The hour drive was very important to me because it allows all of my supporters back home to have the opportunity to visit and make plenty of my matches." - Shawn Streck

"My goal is to keep the best talent here at home. We believe Indiana has some of the finest talent in the country and we can do great things if we can keep that talent in state." - Tony Ersland

shawn chose purdue because...

"The main thing that stood out was the relationship we [the Purdue coaches and I] built early on in the recruiting process. It shows the type of coaches and people they are. As the results show, Purdue is making huge strides since they've been hired. They have shown Purdue is definitely a contender and will be for years to come."
