Cochrane Public School News April 2016

Robotics Challenge

On April 29th, 20 members from the Robotic Club will be competing in the annual Robotics Challenge held this year at the Timmins Science Village.

The purpose of the trip is to network and compete with different schools from Northeastern Ontario. Through it, participants will display their skills in programming a robot to execute specific tasks. This event is based upon STEM + P, an acronym for Science, Technology, Engineering and Math education. The "P" stands for Programming.

The first challenge is to build a robot that will go through a simple maze, in the shortest time possible. The second challenge is to build a robot that will wrestle sumo style and win by pushing their opponent out of the ring. Finally, the last challenge is to build a robot that will travel through a flat plane and then an inclined plane in the shortest time possible.

The students are excited about this upcoming activity and they will represent CPS proudly.

Gr. 4 Artists

Students in Ms. Beaupre's Grade 4 class will have the chance to experience what it's like to be real artists. Thanks to the Cochrane Public Library their pieces will be on display for the public to enjoy in the library's Art Gallery. Be sure to visit the gallery located in the basement of the library during the entire month of April to view the Gr. 4 Art Show.

Unique wind chimes using natural and found objects are two of the pieces on display.

This month, the Eco-Explorations class continued their weekly field trips to various locations to experience learning beyond the classroom walls.

ESCHS Drama Students Present to Primary Classes

Great job Aviana and friends!

Students from Grades 1-3 were recently treated to a special Reader's Theatre presentation from a high school drama group. The primary students thoroughly enjoyed how the girls were able to use their voices and props to bring the fable, "The Bremen Town Musicians" to life. Students are hoping to have more of these types of performances in the future. What a wonderful literary experience for these young students!

Students in Mrs. Meaden's Gr. 1 class are captivated by the performance!

Environmental club

The Grades 4-6 Environmental Club consists of students who are concerned about how their actions and the actions of others are affecting the environment. One of the initiatives that they are participating in is a Terra Cycle Recycling Program in partnership with the Polar Bear Habitat. This program is currently accepting materials that aren't normally recyclable such as broken cell phones, laptops/computers, cameras, iPods and iPads. These old and unwanted electronic items can be sent to school with your child to be dropped off at Ms. Beaupre's classroom where they will be safely recycled. Items will be accepted up until EARTH DAY on April 22.
