Kirksey Old Main was the first building constructed on the MTSU campus in 1911. The KOM was one of the five original buildings at MTSU designed by Nashville architect C.K. Colley in Classical Revival style. Legend has it that if you kiss someone on the KOM stairs you will spend the rest of your life with them.

TAKE A VIDEO TOUR

Now that you've gotten a sneak peek, let's get better acquainted.

On September 11, 1911, Middle Tennessee State Normal School opened as one of three teacher preparatory schools in the state of Tennessee. Today, MTSU is a Carnegie Doctoral Research Intensive University that occupies more than 1,000 acres in Rutherford County including a 500- acre main campus, an agricultural campus, an aerospace facility at the Murfreesboro Airport, and the Tennessee Miller Coliseum.

MTSU houses a wide variety of nationally recognized academic degree programs at the baccalaureate, master's, and doctoral levels. The University is composed of eight undergraduate colleges, with more than 40 departments and more than 140 degree programs. The College of Graduate Studies offers more than 100 degree programs.

MTSU has received regional, national, and international acclaim for a variety of programs and activities including distinctive offerings in programs as diverse as recording industry, horse science, aerospace, and a first-of-its-kind academic program in concrete industry management. Many more traditional programs—agricultural science, nursing, accounting, and education, among others—are considered to be among the best in the region.

Named to Top 25 Music Schools in the world by The Hollywood Reporter (2015, 2016)

We have invested more than $700 million in new and renovated facilities on our Murfreesboro campus. A 250,000-square-foot, $147 million Science Building, which opened in the 2014 fall semester, represents one of the most significant investments made by the state of Tennessee toward the enhancement of science and technology education.

MTSU is the second-largest producer of graduates in Tennessee among public universities; the No. 1 producer of adult (25 years old and older) and low-income (Pell Grant-eligible) graduates in the state; and the most efficient producer of graduates among the state's public universities, helping more students reach their educational goals with fewer tax dollars.

MTSU’s University Honors College, the first in the state, offers an Ivy League experience for high-ability students. MTSU is one of just 108 colleges and universities recognized recently by the Chronicle of Higher Education for producing Fulbright Scholars, placing it alongside universities such as Duke, Harvard, and Yale. No other Tennessee institution made the list.

For the fourth year in a row, MTSU has been named a "military-friendly institution" by G.I. Jobs magazine. MTSU also has the state's first federal VetSuccess on Campus program and is home to the state’s largest academic support center dedicated to veterans and military families.

Our ambitious Quest for Student Success, which included the hiring of almost 50 additional academic advisors and course redesign, is reshaping MTSU’s approaches to teaching and learning. It has gained national attention from The Washington Post and the Chronicle of Higher Education for its innovation in improving MTSU’s student retention and graduation rates.

All 17 MTSU athletics programs met or exceeded multi-year Academic Progress Rate (APR) requirements. On July 1, 2013, MTSU moved to Conference USA from the Sun Belt Conference, in which it had won nine All-Sports trophies and more than 50 conference championships. MTSU athletics will benefit greatly from C-USA's television partnerships, increased bowl tie-ins, and larger national footprint.

MTSU's men's basketball earned their second consecutive Conference USA Tournament Championship in 2017-2018, and exceeded expectations in the NCAA Tournament by defeating No.5-seeded Minnesota to make their second consecutive trip to the second round of the tournament.

Reggie Upshaw (2017 graduate) celebrates with teammates in final seconds before win over Minnesota.

In the 2015-2016 season, MTSU men's and women's basketball posted remarkable seasons. Both teams boasted 20+ wins, took home Conference USA Championship titles, and appeared in the NCAA Tournament. The men's team advanced past Michigan State in what many consider the biggest upset in NCAA tournament history.

Arguably the greatest tournament upset of all-time

Putting the "madness" in March Madness, our Blue Raiders accomplished the remarkable by defeating No. 2 seed Michigan State in the opening round of the 2016 NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament. Although we lost to Syracuse in the second round, the win catapulted the basketball program into the national spotlight, reaching over 1 billion people in two weeks' time.
