There’s music on the horizon

Arts & Letters presents Concert Choir Fest

More than 150 youth voices will resonate in the Meridian Community College McCain Theater when the College’s Arts and Letters Series presents its next event, the High School Concert Choir Fest.

The concert is set for Thursday, March 3, at 7 p.m. Admission is free of charge.

High school choirs from Northeast Lauderdale, West Lauderdale and Meridian High, under the direction of Jennie House, Twyla Hurst, Jennifer Davis and Dr. Lorrie Stringer, respectively, will perform nine selections including Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening, I Feel the Spirit, And So It Goes, The Word Was God, Earth Song, It Takes A Village to Raise a Child, Hark I Hear the Harp Eternal, Cantique de Jean Racine and The Roof.

The MCC Concert Choir will perform Those Who Wait Upon the Lord, 1000 Beautiful Things and Gonna Get Over You. The college’s choir is directed by Tammy Miles.

The choirs will combine for a mass choir performance to round out the evening’s entertainment. On the musical bill are A Aula Nobilis, Afternoon on a Hill and When the Trumpet Sounds.

On the cover: MCC Concert Choir gets in rehearsal time before performing. Tammy Miles, far right, directs.

Doggone good

MCC HOSA students donate food to animal shelter

What started out as a way to help has gone to the dogs.

Recently, the Meridian Community College Health Occupational Students of America (HOSA) chapter was invited by a 2012 Radiologic Technology Program alumna to donate food to a local animal rescue as a community service.

Cristina Woodall approached her former instructor Debra Herring, who is the Radiologic Technology Program coordinator, to encourage HOSA students to give food to East Mississippi Animal Rescue as a community service project. Woodall wanted to have a food drive for a place that was near to her heart.

The MCC students collected more than 1,100 pounds of dog food. And as a special treat, Woodall offered a $100 scholarship as a part of a drawing that was held before the food was delivered to the East Mississippi Animal Rescue. Tarra Hudson was the winner of the scholarship.

A representative from the East Mississippi Animal Rescue wrote on their Facebook account about the donation from the MCC students: “Thank you guys so much. Our hearts are full.”

And some pups’ tummies will be, too.

Encourage students

Students may now apply for Foundation scholarships, and the deadline to apply is May 2. Applications are available in the Financial Aid Office.

To be eligible the student must meet the criteria of having a 2.0 or higher grade point average; be enrolled full or part time, completed at least one semester at MCC and return to MCC in the fall.

Something to smile about

Dental Assisting Program is offering three dental X-rays for the asking. “If you are in need of X-ray films or images – and check with your dentist - we can have these taken in the MCC Dental Clinic and sent to your dentist saving you a significant amount of money,” said Robin Johnson, Dental Assisting Program coordinator and instructor.

The Dental Assisting students are in need of a number of patient requirements during the spring semester. Appointments are scheduled on Monday or Wednesday afternoons by calling Johnson at extension 676.

Booking it to help

The Helping Hands committee needs a helping hand in collecting books for an upcoming sale, said Sheila Johnson, Medical Laboratory Technology Program coordinator.

“Over the next few weeks as you are ‘spring cleaning,’ please make a special effort to save your current fiction books by well-known authors. Then bring these books (paperbacks or hardbacks) to Rita McClure in the library. Rita will be accepting your books until March 18,” she said.

Johnson noted they are not accepting any textbooks.

“We truly need your help with this effort so that our book sale fundraiser will be a huge success. Without enough books, we will not be able to host this book sale so please make a special effort to help us,” she said.

Funds raised from the April 5 book sale will be used to help students, staff and faculty at MCC.

Rerouting

The new residence hall construction will start today, Monday, Feb. 29, in the area between College Crossing Apartments and College Park Shopping Center, said Adam Foreman, maintenance supervisor.

During the construction, access through this area will be closed. The

gates will be locked so they will be used for construction use only.

Also during the construction, Physical Plant will routing freight trucks differently through the gym parking lot. “We will be blocking off some parking spaces to ensure truck access through the parking lot.

“If you could possibly add a comment line when you place orders that will be coming in on large freight trucks to call 601-484-8651 for any access directions. We will have signage up to help direct deliveries to the Physical Plant also,” he said.

Foreman also advised to use caution during this time due to this parking lot receiving a large increase in traffic due to the construction.
