Effective Guided Reading Instruction Resources EdCamp KC 2015 Renee bradshaw title 1 reading

At EdCampKC on November 7, 2015, I attended a session on guided reading instruction. We discussed tools used to enhance instruction in classrooms. These resources were the top picks by teachers in the group.

The Daily 5 was written by the 2 Sisters. This book shows you how to train your students to participate in each of the five components: Read to Self, Read to Someone, Work on Writing, Listen to Reading, and Word Work. Explicit modeling, practice, reflecting and refining takes place during the launching phase, preparing the foundation for a year of meaningful content and instruction tailored to meet the unique needs of each child.

The Daily 5 is a structure that will help students develop the daily habits of reading, writing and working with peers.

The Cafe Book was also written by The 2 Sisters. The Daily 5 is the structure and The Cafe (Comprehension, Accuracy, Fluency, Expanded Vocabulary) is the teaching tool. This book contains mini lessons, suggestions on how to teach strategies, and resources.

Great Habits, Great Readers: A Practical Guide for K-4 Reading in the Light of Common Core: Teaching the Skills and Strategies Students Need for Success was written by Paul Bambrick-Santoyo, Aja Settles, Juliana Worrell. This book includes the strategies, systems, and lessons from classrooms. It is broken down by skill and level to use in small group instruction. It also includes a dvd and other supplementary material.

Building Academic Vocabulary: Teacher's Manual was written by Robert J. Marzano and Debra J. Pickering. Building Academic Vocabulary Teacher’s Manual lists 7,923 terms in 11 subject areas extracted from national standards documents, organized into four grade-level intervals: K-2, 3-5, 6-8, and 9-12. The lists are subject area specific. It is recommended to teach one vocabulary word per subject each week. The book gives teaching strategies and a six-step process for teaching academic vocabulary.

The premise is simple; we pick a book to read aloud to our students during a set 6-week period and during that time we try to make as many global connections as possible. Each teacher decides how much time they would like to dedicate and how involved they would like to be. Some people choose to connect with just one class, while others go for as many as possible. The scope and depth of the project is up to you. While there are official tools you can use such as Skype, Twitter, WriteAbout or Edmodo, you choose the tools that will make the most sense for you. Teachers get a community of other educators to do a global project with, hopefully inspiring them to continue these connections through the year
