Days Out in the Nene Valley #1 Heritage: Fotheringhay & Oundle

With so much to see, do, eat and visit, its almost impossible to take in all of the Nene Valley in one visit. With that in mind, we have created this series of downloadable itineraries for visitors to help plan their trip.

Spend the morning in Fotheringhay

One village has played a key role in English history being both the birthplace of Richard III and the final destination of Mary Queen of Scots. Learn more about the village’s unique place in English history with a visit to St. Mary and All Saints Church and the castle mound.

About St. Mary and All Saints

Open all year. This famous Perpendicular style church is a small part of a once great Collegiate foundation dating from 1411. Striking features include the octagonal lantern tower, the two storey north porch and the pinnacles and flying buttresses along the length of the nave.

After a walk around Fotheringhay and Woodnewton, there are a number of options for adventurers looking for a delicious lunch including The Falcon in Fotheringhay, The Queens Head in Nassington or the Tap & Kitchen in Oundle (pictured)

Spend the afternoon in Oundle

Stroll around this historic market town famous for its Georgian streetscapes and impressive limestone buildings. There is much to discover whether you are on the history trail, attending one of the many cultural events or want to enjoying active country pursuits.

The Talbot Hotel is famous for its New Street and inner courtyard facades, which were built with stone from Fotheringhay Castle in 1630. The staircase is believed to be that which Mary Queen of Scots famously descended on route to her execution at the castle on 8 February 1587.
